Once Upon A Time

Familiar tales with a twist.

ABC Once Upon a Time

Various genres exist in films, television shows and books. As I grew up I realized that my favorite is non-fiction. Every now and then I will watch or read a random genre for fun. For television shows in particular, I enjoy drama-action pack shows such as “Scandal,” “Blacklist,” “The Mindy Project,” “Nashville” and many others.

When summer began I dove into shows on Hulu and Netlfix. One night, after I finished watching “Devious Maids” around midnight, I began searching for another show to binge on. So Netflix suggested “Once Upon a Time” but I wasn’t sure whether to watch it because fantasy is not my first choice. However, drama is. I had heard about the show, I have talked about it on my show too. I knew it involved some Disney characters along with other mythical characters but that was it.

I said “what the hell” and pressed play. Although some parts were/are cheesy, I loved it! Maybe the little girl in me came out when I saw Snow White, Evil Queen, Rumplestiltskin and many other characters from my childhood! I have loved books since I was a child, I read about the classic fairytales and myths. Although their stories in this show are slightly altered, the personalities remain the same.

I am barely starting season three so I am almost half way. The sixth season premieres towards the end of September on ABC.

A number of characters have been introduced and here are my favorites!

1. Prince Charming:

Total cliché I know but he is adorable! He is chivalrous and EVERYTHING.

2. Red:

Aside from being beautiful- the twist to her story is awesome!

3. Rumplestiltskin:

Let me overlook his dark side but he is extremely clever- and not to mention, POWERFUL.

4. Belle:

Rumplestilskins' main love and book nerd who sees the good in everyone.

5. Hook

The witty captain.

6. The Evil Queen

Aside from her makeup always being great, she has a strong passion for vengeance and will stop at nothing- it’s pretty entertaining.

Obviously the show is a mixture of drama and fantasy. Magic is the main source of power in their land. I find it weird but cool at the same time when I see the Evil Queen rip out people’s heart and crush it before their eyes.

Another thing I enjoy about this show is their wardrobe. There are oh so many cloaks, different colors and lengths!

This ABC show has been on television since 2011, it is a twist on classic fairytales. With its sixth season on the way, it demonstrates it’s success. As far as I have seen, some of the fairytales include “Snow White,” “Peter Pan,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Mulan,” “Pinnochio,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Hansel and Gretal,” “Jack and the Giant Beanstalk” and what through me off was when “Dr. Frankenstein” appeared.

Overall, great show!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
