The Olympics are in full swing, and as per expectations (mine at least) the United States is straight up balling out at these games. We have nearly twice as many total medals as the country with the second-most medals, and nearly one-third of them are gold medals. Now, this is great and all, but there's one major problem I have with the Olympics, and here's how I'll explain it.
"Oh hey the Olympics are on! I wonder what's on all seven channels covering it today!" *proceeds to check every channel's events*
"Here we have swimming, and on the next channel is more swimming, and here's gymnastics, aaaaand here's more swimming, and..."
Well, you get the gist. Several sports are utterly disrespected by the television networks, and so many cool events go totally under the radar because the TV only shows you Michael Phelps and Simone Biles (as if it were even questionable that they wouldn't do well). Luckily, I downloaded the Olympics app so I could watch other sports that weren't pool-goers and back flippers. What I found out:
Team handball looks crazy fun to play. Not only is it high scoring, but it's something that America would easily dominate if we were to enter a team (we're dumb for not doing so)
Our women's water polo team is on a gold medal defense this year. Did anyone else not realize that we have the best water polo team on this planet?
The throws in track are only put on TV in passing, but I feel like they need more exposure (totally not biased because I compete in that sport).
Why don't they show more rowing on the TV? It's practically the same as watching swimming, except you can actually see the competitors bodies and how strenuous and difficult what they're doing is.
I don't want to knock the other athletes competing in Rio, but some of them get way too much TV time and it's really not fair to the other sports nor does it attract me to watch more Olympics on TV.
