Here is a little known park located off of Exit 9 on I-575 in Woodstock, GA called Olde Rope Mill Park. It features a plethora of amenities, such as some of the best single-track mountain biking in north Atlanta, easy access to the little river and lake Allatoona, and miles of hiking through pristine North Georgia wilderness. Visitors are able to see things like the old mill ruins, a larger waterfall that flows directly into lake Allatoona, and a large (still active) train trestle.
This is a map of the trails that local mountain biking chapters have built for all to use and enjoy. The trails vary in difficulty from beginner to intermediate so that everyone is able to find a suitable trail. Remember to follow all rules stated at the entrance to the park.
Mountain biking is what the park is most known for, but there are many other things to see and do in the park.
Here are some of the pictures that I have produced over many years of visiting this beautiful park.
The water level can vary greatly depending on what time of the year you visit, also how much rainfall has fallen recently. This creates a different experience every time you come by for a visit.
As you hike upriver you'll pass by the old mill ruins from the 1800's, there isn't much left but they are cool to look at and imagine.
This is the large train trestle that spans over the little river. If you go hiking on the trails for a couple miles up river then you'll happen upon it. please be reminded that these train tracks are in fact active ones, and the train comes by very fast so you do not want to be anywhere near them when the train passes.
Views from the top of the trestle are great no matter what time of the year it is, but usually the park is most pretty in the summer and fall months.
Wildlife encounters are pretty rare aside from the occasional deer. though one day I was walking around exploring and I stumbled upon this little guy. Yes, I moved him off of the tracks, back to safety.
If one were to go down to the other side of the park then they could see the elusive Allatoona falls. They are only accessed by boat or by crossing over private property, so make sure you have means to get there.
Olde Rope Mill is definitely a park to visit if you live in Atlanta and love to explore outdoors. Make sure to bring a mountain bike or kayak for extra exploration.
