5 Signs You May Be An Old Soul And How To Survive

I've been told all my life that I am an old soul. I didn't really understand what an "old soul" was until I did some research. The simplest definition I've found is "someone who feels disconnected from this time period and feels attracted to older ways of doing things."

The following are some signs that you may be an old soul.

1. You become very mentally drained when being around people too frequently.

This isn't to say that you don't enjoy spending time with people. I love spending time with people. However, if I don't take time to myself every now and again, I feel exhausted.

Solution: Make sure to give yourself some you time. This will help your mind reset.

2. You often find yourself deep in thought.

Overthinking is very commonly associated with being an old soul. This thinking may be about such simple things as the plan for your day or as complicated as what your great purpose is in life.

Solution: Remind yourself when you're overthinking too much that thinking is taking a lot of your energy. Journaling is a way to get your thoughts out of your head and still process them.

3. You may prefer the company of older people/people who are mature.

Older people seem easier to have conversations with to you. They are full of wisdom and understand your mind more than those your age may.

Solution: Appreciate your elders and their wisdom.

4. Most people come to you for advice and also believe you are very empathic.

Those close to you really trust your opinion and usually will ask you when they are unsure of something going on with them. While it is a compliment that people care so much about your opinion, it can easily become overwhelming.

Solution: If you feel overwhelmed, let your friends know that. They will understand. You will be unable to give your best advice if your mind is filled to capacity.

5. Knowledge is very important to you.

Most believe that old souls enjoy educating themselves as much as they can. They want to be the best version of themselves they can be.

Solution: Read and learn as much as you want. It's good for you!

Some may poke fun at you for claiming to be an old soul. They may say you're just being a loner. I've had people tell me that I'm too young to not want to party every night and always be having fun. I disagree. There's nothing wrong with partying, but an old soul like myself doesn't feel like partying all the time. Don't let this bother you. However, on the other hand, don't act as if you are better than others because you're an old soul. You're not too cool or better than anyone. Being an old soul is about feeling different and unlike others your age. It's not to be used as a tool to be rude to others.

If these things seem to match your personality, perhaps you are an old soul. I hope these solutions can help you survive in this world.

It is that time of year again. Christmastime. It is one of my favorite seasons for a myriad of reasons. Here are just a few reasons why I love Christmas. This list is in no order of importance.

1. The Christmas decorations

I am that person who will decorate directly after Thanksgiving is over. This year, my roommates and I put the tree up in our apartment before we even left for Thanksgiving break. It is a great stress reliever for me to just sit in my living room and work on the huge amount of work I have before the semester is over.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?
