Drake is without a doubt successful in the rapping industry. He has won 4 Grammy Awards out of 42 nominations, as well as 2 MTV Music Awards. Also, he has received multi-platinum for all five of his albums as well as for many hit singles.
He is one of my favorite rappers because of his musicality, style, and lyric choice. But I personally believe that old-school Drake is better than the new version of himself. Here are 9 reasons why:
1. The music itself varies on Drake's older albums.
Compared to his newer albums such as Scorpion and Views, Drake's older albums had a sound that was unique to him. I've noticed that especially in Scorpion, the rhythm and tempo of most of his songs sound the same. What drew me to Drake was the fact that his music sounded completely different from other rappers out on the market. Now, he seems to be blending in to try to compete with other artists. Go back to doing you, Drake!
2. His collaborations with Rihanna are absolute perfection.
When "What's My Name?" came out, you know everyone had that song on repeat. Their voices pair so well together. The pair has 5 songs together total, and they are timeless. Also, the media was buzzing about their complicated relationship, as they would hint to be more than friends, but deny it every chance they could. There hasn't been a song released with them since 2016-- we want more!
3. Drake was a character on Degrassi: The Next Generation.
OG fans will remember that Drake was on Degrassi: The Next Generation. His character was Jimmy Brooks, who became disabled from the waist down. His character was charming, and this was where he started to showcase his rapping skills. I'd love to see him get back into acting!
4. Drake was out of legal trouble.
According to my research, Drake has recently been involved in multiple lawsuits. The dates of the lawsuits were in 2012, 2014, and 2017. He has been sued for misuse of lyrics, usage of another musician's voice, using part of a pre-existing music track without permission, and even an assault acted out by one of his bodyguards. C'mon Drake, get your act together.
5. Old Drake didn't cause a ruckus with other artists either.
Drake has been known to be involved in a few feuds with other rappers. The list includes: Chris Brown, P-Diddy, Tyga, Meek Mill, Joe Budden, and even a long-time collaborator of his, Kanye West. A couple of these feuds resulted in physical altercations outside or inside nightclubs. Before 2012, Drake used to be a stand-up guy. What happened?
6. Drake was more honest back in the day.
What do I mean by this? I'm referring to the fact that he has a son, but he kept his existence sheltered from the world. Although it is normal to do that to protect a child from the public eye, he denied the claims. He finally revealed Adonis by rapping about his son on Scorpion. Adonis, you don't deserve to be treated this way!
7. He used to not be all up in his feelings.
Drake coined the term "YOLO", which means you only live once. He was carefree and easygoing. Nowadays, his music is all about heartbreak. What happened to his old spirit? It's okay to be vulnerable, but basing all of your music off of sensible topics is like putting your eggs all in one basket. At some point, hearing about his woes is not going to sell.
8. There were more collaborations in general.
On Scorpion, there are only three songs where Drake collaborated with other artists. Even in his album before Scorpion, More Life, there is at least double the amount of collaborations. This shows that he is isolating himself as an artist. But, why? This explanation is in reason number seven. If he is getting into feuds with other artists, nobody will want to collaborate with him. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer, Drake.
9. Drake used to be down-to-earth.
When Drake first entered the music scene, he wasn't afraid to be himself. Even if it meant not dressing up in fancy clothes, and he always had the biggest smile on his face. Now, it's all about selling the image. This includes a buffed-up physique, more tattoos, and nicer clothes. Be who you want to be, Drake, not what "sells"!
Disclaimer: I'm not trying to diss Drake in any way. Drake is one of my favorite artists, and always will be. I'm just making comparisons to who he used to be in his character and music vs. now. Personally, I would like to see Drake become a bit more old-school and get his edge back-- go back to his roots!
