Old Navy is receiving backlash after producing and selling shirts that dissuade children from becoming artists. Their design of a relatively plain, white shirt with “young aspiring artist” printed on has many people deeply offended, and angry. The shirt has a line through the word artist and the word artist is supplemented with other professions like astronaut or president.
Many people are upset because the shirt's message implies that becoming a president, or astronaut is more fulfilling than a life in the arts. Many outraged artist parents, have taken to recreating the shirt with, "old navy exec" crossed out instead. One artist parent even tweeted, " The irony that it took an artist to design this." Most people who shop at Old Navy believe the shirt diminishes creativity, and squashes children's aspirations to perhaps one day become an artist. As if becoming a President, or Astronaut is a more practical goal.
The shirt has since been pulled off the racks, both in stores and online, and replaced with a generic shirt about loving your grandma.
Old Navy released a statement saying, “At Old Navy we take our responsibility to our customers seriously. We would never intentionally offend anyone, and we are sorry if that has been the case. Our toddler tees come in a variety of designs including tees that feature ballerinas, unicorns, trucks and dinosaurs and include phrases like, 'Free Spirit.' They are meant to appeal to a wide range of aspirations. With this particular tee, as a result of customer feedback, we have decided to discontinue the design and will work to remove the item from our stores.”
