To the friend, confidant, leader, and overall wonderful human being who I used to call my Managing Editor:

When I joined the Odyssey, I never imagined getting to the place I am now with the organization. I thought that for the time I would be with my community, I would remain merely a content creator.

However, I quickly became an Editor-In-Chief, and I had the incredible pleasure of getting to know you on a personal basis.

With our weekly Skype calls came the chance to know you better. I found out that you had a HUGE love for cats, much like myself. You are a true feminist, an incredible editor, and an outspoken yet calm individual.

I'm not going to lie. I don't open up to people I've just met often. But I found myself telling you about how I met my boyfriend, all of my medical issues, and my life in general. In turn, I was allowed to forge a relationship I didn't think possible with someone who managed both my creators and myself.

The recent cuts that the Odyssey made across the board (firing 50+ other people in your position without warning) was not fair and it concerns me about the future. However, I want you to know that I am staying with the organization and I will make it better than it was before.

You dedicated so much time and energy to our community. Here are just a few of the many comments writers from our community had about you:

"You were always so helpful and nice. I loved getting advice from you."

"We all appreciated her so much and know she will kick ass at whatever awesome thing she does next! And thanks for being so helpful "

"I have not been here long enough to have the pleasure of knowing Kat personally, but I've heard nothing but wonderful things about her. I wish her the best of luck!

"

I have personally seen your drive, dedication, and perseverance throughout my time working with you.

You are such a strong individual. This isn't a step back for you. This gives you the chance to go somewhere where you can shine as brightly as you did here - and even more so in the future.

So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Thank you for teaching me what an ME should act like.

Thank you for caring more about our authors than how many people read our articles.

Thank you for existing and brightening up my Tuesdays and Thursdays with our Skype calls.

Thank you for everything you have done.

You're going to change the world. I know you will.

So go get them.

With an unbelievable amount of love,

Just one of your many EICs.

However, we all know that the holidays have overall changed a little from what they used to be.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
