Most millennials are known for having their faces buried in their phones while texting a thousand miles an hour. It is truly disheartening to see a generation that is only concerned with how many Instagram likes or retweets they can get. Sometimes, I wish I could bring back the times without phones or internet; where the only worry in the world was the day ending. I hear stories from my grandparents and parents about the simple lifestyle they lived, and often find myself jealous. Here is a few things I wish my generation would bring back.
1. Write letters
I can remember a time when I was little that I would run to the mailbox to check and see if I had received any mail. It made my day to get a handwritten letter from my grandparents or a close friend. Now, instead of letters, our phones are becoming inundated with the ridiculous amounts of text messages and emails that we receive. We have gotten lost in what messages mean to one another, and no longer appreciate communication. Why can't we bring back writing handwritten letters to friends, family members, or grandparents?
2. Make phone calls
Often times, we get lost texting and messaging one another, that we fail to actually reach out to the people that we love. Let's make a change, and start calling one another and having real conversations, rather then texting conversations. Ask about how someone's day was, their favorite hobbies, or which book they are reading. Make a phone call and truly listen to someone.
3. Have a good front porch sit and talk
One of my favorite activities to do is sit on the porch, drink sweet tea, and admire the beauty of nature. This sounds like a southern thing, and to me, it is. Unfortunately, I only find myself doing this every once in a while. For once, our generation should put down our phones na have a good front porch sit with either a friend or family member. Tell stories and talk about the past and the future. Sit outside and admire the world we live in.
4. Have a meal without your phone
Home cooked meals are my favorite, but I often find myself snapping a picture and sending it out to the world to let others know what I am eating for dinner that night. What good is taking a picture of your food doing? Nothing. Instead of tweeting or snapping pictures of your food, thank the person who spent time to make it and enjoy every bite.
5. Go on a real date
I love going on dates, and since I have been in a relationship for more than five years, date nights are something that I look forward to. A real date does not have to break the bank. For me, the most fun dates I have been on are the simple ones. There is nothing wrong with making a meal together, but there is something so special about getting dressed up every once in a while and being picked up to go to your favorite restaurant. I love it when my boyfriend even picks the restaurant and talks to me about the most random things. It is so much fun to spend time with the person that I love and make memories. So, stop wishing for fancy dates that are unrealistic and go on a classic date, get dressed up, and make everlasting memories with the person you love.
There is nothing wrong with the lifestyle that millennials live, but often times I wish I lived in a more simple time. I wish that our generation would put our technology away for once and start appreciating others around them, and truly living life. The best moments in life are often the simple moments. So, let's bring back the simple moments, and start living.
