True Life: I Am a Back Home Baller

Saturday Night Live made a spot on music video about going home for the holiday break. As I watched it for the first time, I laughed not only because Cameron Diaz was dressed in a gang-chic fur coat and rhinestone cowboy hat, but because of how scarily accurate this music video was.

As the semester came to a close and I found myself watching the “Back Home Ballers” music video with my roommates more than I was studying, I decided that I would probably unintentionally check off nearly every item on the back home ballers’ list. So, without further ado, here are the things on my winter break to-do list.

  • Have my dad unload all of my summer clothing boxes that I’m returning home for the cold days.
  • Raid the freshly stocked fridge. (Thanks mom!)
  • Do laundry the way I like to do laundry…aka with the free water and detergent. No more Tide Pods!
  • Make a list of all the home cooked meals I want my mom to make.
  • See a movie with the fam on Christmas Day.
  • Naps, on naps, on NAPS.
  • Catch up with all of my high school friends and neighbors.
  • Use my parents’ free WiFi so I can catch up on my Netflix...I mean, winter intersession class.

If you haven’t watched the "Back Home Ballers" music video, I highly recommend it. Thanks to NBC and Saturday Night Live for inspiring what will be a wonderful Christmas break for every college student and young adult, alike. And as much as we act sad to leave our friends for the break, we all know that it’s even harder to say bye to Mom and Dad when the break is over. ('Cause that's the life of a back home baller).

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
