Recently I got to see Melanie Martinez perform at the Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa (and I got to meet her!), so obviously I had to make this week's article about her. Melanie is one of the most unique, totally herself artists out there and her music is proof of that. She writes songs that relate to her life, but in a way that isn't really obvious unless you know a little bit of the backstory behind them. Her debut album, "Crybaby," was written by Melanie as a way to show off her insecurities in hopes of overcoming them, which I personally think is a great message to send to her audience.
Here are some of the best lyrics from "Crybaby!"
1. "All the makeup in the world won't make you less insecure." --"Sippy Cup."
"Sippy Cup" is one of my personal favorites off the album. It's basically saying that your problems and insecurities won't go away just by covering them up, whether it be with makeup or anything else.
2. "Your heart's too big for your body, it's why you don't fit inside." --"Crybaby"
In interviews Melanie always says that Crybaby, the girl in the song, is her. She says that she feels like she's a really emotional person, so this song is about coming to terms with that.
3. "Everyone thinks that we're perfect, please don't let them look through the curtains." --"Dollhouse"
"Dollhouse" is about how people hide who they really are sometimes to seem more "perfect" to others.
4. "I carry Band-Aids on me now for when your soft hands hit the jagged ground." --"Training Wheels"
A love song, but in a super-untraditional way.
5. "You build me up like building blocks just so you can bring me down." --"Alphabet Boy"
This one is about those people who seem like they support you and want the best for you, but really they just want to watch you fail. You just have to ignore them and keep going; soon enough your dreams will come true and they'll be exactly where they were before.
6. "Chasing after you is like a fairy tale." --"Carousel"
Things aren't always what they seem and won't always work out how you want them to. This one was also the theme song for "American Horror Story: Freakshow!"
7. "You were comforting and quiet, how did love become so violent?" --"Teddy Bear"
"Teddy Bear" is about how quickly a good relationship can turn bad, and how scary that can be.
8. "So what if I'm crazy? The best people are." --"Mad Hatter"
This one is about accepting yourself and loving yourself for who you are. It's OK to be a little bit crazy sometimes, almost everyone is.
9. "I don't need a man to make my life sweet." --"Gingerbread Man"
"Gingerbread Man" isn't technically on the "Crybaby" album, but its lyrics are just as meaningful. It's basically saying that you don't need a significant other to be happy with your life.
10. "I'm tired of being careful, tiptoe, trying to keep the water warm. Let me under your skin." --"Soap"
Another one of my favorites. "Soap" is about having to be careful with what you say around certain people and growing so tired of it that you feel like your words are just going to spill out of your mouth.
11. "I'm not a piece of cake for you to just discard while you walk away with the frosting on my heart." --"Cake"
"Cake" is about realizing you're worth more than how some people may treat you.
12. "Maybe it's a cruel joke on me - -whatever, whatever. Just means there's way more cake for me - -forever, forever." --"Pity Party"
"Pity Party" is about realizing that your friends might not really be your friends, and that it's OK
to do things by yourself sometimes.
13. "It's such a waste when little girls grow into their mother's face, but little girls are learning how to cut and paste, and pucker up their lips until they suffocate." --"Mrs. Potato Head"
This is one of the most important songs on the album, lyric-wise. "Mrs. Potato Head" talks about what girls and women go through when it comes to feeling beautiful. The song goes into how sometimes girls will do something drastic to feel better about themselves, but that doesn't always work out.
