When one thinks of the state of Oklahoma, there isn't much that comes to mind. At the best, we think of tornadoes, farms, and a lot of flat, flat land. But, to my surprise, when I recently went with my family to the great state of OK, there was a lot more than the stereotype indicates. So I decided to share my wealth of knowledge with the rest of you, and include my favorite things to do while in Oklahoma.
1. University of Oklahoma Football Game.
Now I would like the point out that the football games that take place within UCF are basically sub-par compared to the one that I attended in Norman, Oklahoma. For a little bit of a comparison, UCF can barely fill a 45,000 person stadium with its biggest rival USF, while OU completely sold out their 88,000 person stadium just for their game against TCU.
Not only does the sheer amount of people who attend these games show their superiority to the Knights' football games, but also the fact that everybody is standing every minute of the game and the crowd sounds like cars whizzing by on a highway. It is definitely something that you have to experience in order to understand. Oh and to top it all of, and I want you to listen closely: Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium has their very own Chick-fil-a built into it. Just waiting for all of the broke college kids to scrounge up that loose change in their pockets and buy that Chick-fil-a sandwich.
2. Leaves becoming works of art.
I am fully aware that leaves are not the gorgeous golden, crimson, or the brightly beautiful gold colors all year-round. But I would highly recommend visiting smack in the middle of fall.
I might just be a sucker for these leaves because I have lived in Florida for all 20 years of my life and am used to leaves going from their typical green to the mud-brown death of them on the grass; but to me, there is nothing like tree after tree doing their best imitation of a classic sunset.
3. Hurts Donuts.
I am not entirely sure why, but just around every corner in Norman, Oklahoma, there was a donut shop that awaited us. And although the reason for so many sweet shops escaped me, I'm not about to question the solid logic of the Mid-Westerns within this city.
During game day, instead of the typical liquor and greasy food that many people surround themselves with, my family decided deep-fried dough was the way to go (God, I love my family.) And we indulged ourselves with a classic glazed donut, a cookies and creme donut, and a cosmic brownie (and yes, I am talking about a donut inspired by every child's guilty pantry pleasure.)
If you find yourself in the middle of Oklahoma with a rumbling stomach and a pocket full of cash, you need to find your way to Hurts Donuts - or rather, any of the 30 that we stumbled upon on the way.
4. Bricktown, Oklahoma City.
I don't want to build up the expectations of this quaint little place too much, but it is a nice refresher in the middle of a bustling city. It's a small few blocks of restaurants and shops that line the riverfront within Oklahoma City, and we just spent a few hours there to grab lunch and walk around.
The best part is 100% the ambiance of walking down the river. And they make sure to riddle it with twinkling lights and bushy, colorful ties so your eyes are never straining for something beautiful to look at. Not to mention, they have a Starbucks right at the entrance, and what is a casual stroll in town without a nice warm chestnut praline latte cuddling your hand?
5. The University of Oklahoma.
I remember touring Florida State and absolutely falling in love with all of the brick-covered buildings and the history of the school. But even Tallahassee could not prepare me for the grandiosity that is the University of Oklahoma.
Once you are walking these grounds, you never knew that brick could acquire such an overwhelming sense of awe and nostalgia within your own body. And to seal the deal for me, my jaw was on the floor dragging behind me when I walked into the library and saw the beauty also continued the further you walked in. The insides were lined with hand-crafted wood arches, intricate stain glass windows, and the grandest oak tables that could trump the inside of the Oval Office.
6. Legends.
I will admit to you guys, that my first impression of this place was a bad one. And it has nothing to do with the actual look of the place or the taste of their food. It was the fact that I was forced to get up at the crack of dawn (9:00 am) in order to encounter it.
It is the tiniest little restaurant that serves the biggest flavors of food. I personally went for the Eggs Benedict and I swear I heard some angels singing in the background. And not to mention, their cheddar and chive biscuits were absolutely scrumptious to the point where I could hear my stomach telling me enough. If you need a place to brunch, I will be disappointed in you if you don't make reservations here.
So I know at first glance Oklahoma doesn't seem like very much, but I promise you, it's a flat land filled with some hidden gems. And if you do give it a chance, make sure to head towards at least one of these amazing places!
