There are several joys in a college student's life, but the most sacred of these is nap time. Unfortunately, this is joy is usually overlooked because it is not considered as important as studying or work. I am here to tell you that napping is just as important as both of these.
One of these reasons is the increase in productivity that results from taking a nap. It is impossible for me to get any work done when I am tired. Whether I am lamenting the fact that I am not asleep or I cannot keep my eyes open, it just doesn’t happen. The impact of a 10-minute power nap on an hour's worth of homework is incredible.
A huge problem with college students is a general lack of good health. Taking a nap everyday can help solve this issue. I know there are studies out there that say that you should get X amount of hours of sleep a night, but a lot of times (especially in college) that is just not possible. People also say that you can catch up on sleep during the weekends: not true. Once you lose that day, it is gone. So take a nap for your mental and physical health. You’ll thank me for this someday.
Speaking of health, one of the unhealthiest weeks of the year for college students is finals week. Logging less hours in the library and more on the couch will not only help your well-being, but will also help you keep your scholarship. For some people, it is impossible to even imagine taking a nap during crucial times of the semester like midterms and finals week, but these are the most important times to take a nap. You will do a whole lot better on the test trusting the information your brain already holds and catching up on your sleep, I promise. If you didn’t learn it during the semester, you won’t learn it at 2 a.m. the night before a test, so go to sleep!
So we now know that without a nap, you will do worse in school. And then, because you do worse in school, you will be cranky in real life. So please, take a nap for the general well-being of society. On airplanes, they always say that in the event of a loss of cabin pressure, you must put the mask on yourself before you can help anyone else. The same is true in the real world. If you are not taking care of yourself, you cannot help anyone else. I guarantee that Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Theresa took naps and look at all the good they did. You could do that too if you were well-rested enough.
Finally, the most important reason to take a nap is for yourself. For me, there is no greater feeling in the world than crawling into bed in the middle of the afternoon. It is an act of defiance against the establishment that is time. Society says you must go to bed at night, but I say you can sleep whenever you want. If you’re tired, take a nap! You deserve it.
So you see, naps are an integral part of society. You are better for taking a nap, your friends are better because you took a nap, and the world is better because you took a nap. Here’s a little bonus info: learning through osmosis sometimes works so don’t feel bad if you are too lazy to move your text books away from your napping space. Happy napping!!
