Why It's Okay To Take A Step Back

Self care should always come first.

Why It's Okay To Take A Step Back
Antonio Gullem

With the events of the past week (or really, the past year), it's really easy to get caught up in all the social media drama surrounding politics. Of course, this is not a bad thing. Democracy thrives on people actively voicing their opinions. That's how change happens.

However, it is also really easy to let these things get to you. Our current political situation can seem so hopeless sometimes. Even listening to people talk about their thoughts on the current political climate is saddening. People who were once so active and energetic have lost all hope in the future.

What you need to know is that we still have power, but we can't use it when we feel like all our attempts at change are useless. This is why I believe that sometimes we just need to take a step back.

I'm not saying that these issues aren't important, because they absolutely are. However, your health and mental wellness are also extremely important. You need to be able to care for yourself in order to have the energy to fight for your beliefs.

Sometimes, you just need to take a self care day. "Treat yourself," as they say on Parks and Rec. Go for a walk, take a long shower, go out with your friends, treat yourself to a nice meal. I firmly believe that these are things everyone needs to do from time to time in order to relieve the stress imposed on us by school, politics, etc.

And remember: you shouldn't feel like you personally have to fix everything. I often have conversations with people who try to take all issues onto their own shoulders, and then feel devastated when they realize that they can't.

Take things in stride. Do what you can. Even baby steps can lead to major change. Don't take on more than you can handle.

Most importantly, know that it's okay to just take a step back and breathe.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
