It's 2:03am and your 88-year-old grandmother just wet herself in her sleep. The light switch is flipped on, she is gently awakened and moved to another bed. The sheets are removed and carried down the hall to be cleaned. After, your grandmother is read to before she safely drifts back into a comfortable sleep. But it wasn't your hands who did the "dirty work," instead the caring hands of a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Lately on social media, I have noticed different statuses and memes making fun of CNAs. But I have also noticed the same people pecking at their keyboard about how "ratchet" of a job it is are the same ones whose grandmothers are being taken care of. First off all I will say this: Every legal/non-crooked job matters and contributes to the well being of our world. If a single mother fresh out of high school wants to become a CNA then so be it. Chances are, she's working harder than you. It's not everyday you find someone who wants to clean up after someone else, but at the end of the day it has to be done. It takes a person who is strong and loving.
Next time you decide to bash your local CNA think about the future of your grandmother or your mom. Will you be willing to put the time in? Sometimes, a smiling CNA face is the only one your grandmother sees for months. They see the hardship, they see the pain, the accomplishments and the happiness you are too busy to indulge in. This is not meant to call out people who are at an inconvenience to see their family members, but those who take the care givers jobs lightly.
To CNAs across the globe:
Your hands get dirty. Your emotions get connected. Your hearts are changed. Your job matters. Don't get discouraged whether you are in for the long run or just a short time to get on your feet. Whatever the situation is, you are a world changer. The Lord doesn't judge or categorize us by who makes the most money or who has the best job, but how we love and care for other people. Thank you for setting aside your pride and loving others the way Christ does. You are appreciated and loved.
Sincerely,
Someone Who Knows Your Worth And Need
