There is no week during the college football season that is more exciting than rivalry week. Often times there is so much at stake for many of the games and this year was no different. There are many beliefs out there, but I believe that Ohio State vs. Michigan is the greatest rivalry in college football. Historically, it has produced some of greatest games of all time. This years matchup was no exception. I am not calling it the greatest game of all time, but it was an instant classic. The Ohio State Buckeyes rallied from behind in order to beat the Michigan Wolverines in double overtime 30-27.
The game offered a little bit of everything. It had drama, controversial plays, and a Jim Harbaugh-Urban Meyer showdown. From the neutral fan standpoint, you could not ask for more. It is unfortunate that it came down to a winner take all situation. I think the game this past Saturday showed that both teams are legit and worthy of a place in the College Football Playoff. Both teams are very dynamic. Despite their youth, Ohio States Defense has the ability to force turnovers and make big plays when they are needed. J.T. Barrett and the Ohio State offense had a tough time getting things going for a majority of the game. The offense came alive in the fourth quarter and during overtime to ensure the victory against the team up north.
So what is next for the Buckeyes? Since Penn State will be going to the Big Ten Championship game, Ohio State will be in Columbus being spectators. It is safe to say they are most likely in the College Football Playoff. They have a very impressive resume this season with victories over Michigan, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Reading some articles on ESPN this morning, what we do not know is how powerful is having a conference championship victory. The committee definitely has to figure that out. Regardless, some really good teams will find themselves on the outside looking in. I think it is safe to say the silver bullets will be shown some love by the committee. There is one thing, we will know exactly where they stand after next weekend.
What about the rest of the final four teams? I think it is safe to say that the Alabama Crimson Tide are a lock as of now. They are currently undefeated and if they win the SEC conference championship, they are for sure in. I think the Buckeyes are still heavily favored to be in. In addition to that, I think Clemson and Washington have to be the frontrunners to get in as well. There are some scenarios where I can see Michigan, Wisconsin, or even Penn State getting in. With one week of conference championships left, there is lots of situations to be played out. The rollercoaster of the college football season is just getting started.
