On Tuesday, December 6th, Ohio Legislature has passed a bill that bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected. A fetal heartbeat can typically be detected 6 weeks after conception, which is a point where many women don't even realize they are pregnant yet.
The bill is sitting on governor John Kasich's desk and he has 10 days to veto is before it automatically becomes a law. The bill does not even have exceptions for cases of rape and incest. The only exception is if the mother were in prominent danger if the child is kept.
The Ohio Right to Life campaign promotes bans against abortion, although even this group would find a 6 week ban unconstitutional. Although, with President-elect Trump soon coming to office, this policy may change as Trump has said before that he will elect Supreme court justices that will oppose abortion.
Planned Parenthood is fighting back saying that this bill “ is intended to make abortion illegal in Ohio.” This bill is a large step back for women, seeing as they can't even make their own medical decisions for their body. "Not only is this shameful, but it's dangerous for women," said Iris Harvey, the CEO of Planned Parenthood.
The bill was written by Janet Folger Porter who is a former Christian radio talk show host. Her views were so radical that she was let go from the radio show. She is proud of the bill passing through Legislative and encourages Kasich to sign the bill. There is another bill being considered by Ohio government which proposes a ban on abortion after 20 weeks of fetal heartbeat. Many citizens have been protesting these bills in the fight for women's rights.
For years, the fight on abortion has been a prominent issue in all political debates, although the issue has never come down to this tight of standards. To have a ban on abortion after only 6 weeks of a heartbeat is surely unfair as many women may not even know they are pregnant yet at 6 weeks.
As republican as Ohio has always been, the state has taken an even larger step to right recently. Not only is the state not allowing women to make their own decision, but they are also arming teachers at schools with guns. The republican bias in the state has taken a drastic leap.
More information about the decision on the Ohio Heartbeat Bill will be released soon.
