Oh, What A Night

The story of an insanely awesome trip that I went on.

Oh, What A Night
Haily Jones

We hear terms like "Yolo" and "Carpe Diem" all of the time, and being in college is thought to be about creating awesome memories to share about your young adulthood. My friends and I are quick to jump at any cool opportunity we hear about. We are constantly making memories and having a blast, but this weekend, I'd say we took "Seize the day" to a whole new level.

While the world can feel like a big and scary place, it's also quite amazing how it really is a small world. This weekend, my friends and I were blessed enough to have some awesome connections with friends in Cincinnati, Ohio. There's a house there known as "The Brotel." Some male college students live there, and they are all so kind and awesome. It just so happened that this weekend the, boys of the Brotel threw a party. I know what you're thinking. "Classic. College kids driving to Cincinnati to get drunk and crazy. How dumb." Well, my friends, that actually is not the case.

You see, like I said, the boys of the Brotel are kind and awesome young men, and they actually hosted a dry party. That's right, no alcohol. What's even crazier is this party was sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drink. It was insane.

So, after some decent communication and poor planning, my friends and I were able to go to this amazing party. It took about eight or nine hours to drive to Cincinnati from Raleigh, but it was so worth it. First off, Cincinnati is a beautiful city. There is so much to do there, and the food is phenomenal. We spent the day exploring the city and napping, but as the night approached, we couldn't contain our excitement. We had just driven so far to attend this party, which is known as one of the greatest parties ever! And boy, it was that and then some.

The party was jersey-themed, so almost everyone that came had on a jersey. It's nice to see college kids actually participate. There were Rockstars everywhere. If anyone was tired, they were immediately handed an energy drink, and five minutes later, they'd be so hyper. The party was kicked off by singing the National Anthem and then immediately followed by lots and lots of dancing.

I honestly have no idea how all of those people fit inside of that house. There was hardly any room to breathe, but my friends and I had a ball dancing the night away. After a few minutes of dancing, we'd go outside for fresh air and a little socializing, and some more energy drinks. Then, we'd head back inside to dance our hearts out again.

It was seriously one of the greatest parties of all time. With people being everywhere, having lots of energy, and being able to create these memories with my best friends, how could you not have a good time? The hospitality shown by the boys of the Brotel was unbelievable, and I really appreciated how awesome it was of them to show their guests that you can have a great time and make great memories without being drunk.

After tearing it up on the dance floor for a while, we decided we'd head home. That's right. Immediately following the party, we went straight back to Raleigh. We grabbed a few cans of Rockstar and headed back to our homes. We'll sleep when we're dead, I suppose. Was it worth it? Absolutely! Although our entire group of friends was exhausted by the end of the trip, it was such a great experience to be able to go meet new people, experience new things, and create amazing memories.

We all made it back in one piece, and in good timing. We also all immediately went home to sleep, which was great. I'd redo this trip over and over, because it was that fun! I really am just so grateful to be able to have these opportunities to share with these friends. So, maybe it is a little insane to drive long distances, party, and drive back home, but it was definitely worth it. We partied like Rockstars!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
