With school fast approaching, some have already started their search for their new wardrobe (for at least the fall). For some, it is an easy choice in what to get—but what about essentials for goth men and women? Usually, finding items in this style beyond the 'simple,' can be difficult to find. Besides online stores and Hot Topic, you are most likely to find very simple and basic items. At least there are some simple essentials to start with - and then branch out with other accessories. So let's start off with the basics and continue from there.
1. Black Coat(s)
Whether you decide to go for a very simple black leather coat or a fancy laced jacket; it's an essential to have especially with the cold weather that comes with (and after) fall.
2. Boots/Shoes
Boots (and shoes) are a always nessesary. Yes, it is something that everyone tends to have, but on top of that it tends to bring an outfit together. Just a simple pair of military-styled boots can give you that spunky and gothic edge to your outfit.
3. Scarves
Now I know what you are thinking—why scarves? it's actually quite straight forward, but it has to deal with adding a statement piece to what would normally be considered a simple (and sometimes boring) outfit. Either with a patterned scarf - or a big statement shawl - it really makes you stand out in a crowd.
4. Black Dress Shirt
This one is for one of those items that can easily be a statement piece - but it can easily be DIY'ed to make it fit your style more. For some, adding lace/ruffles to the sleeves, or adding pins and brooches and other things into it, whatever makes the shirt yours (and that makes you feel great!).
5. Black Pants (and Shorts)
You can never go wrong with something so simple - and an item that be pair with other items and accessories. From just a simple pair of black jeans, to tripp pants to even full blown printed yoga pants, you'll find something to suit your gothic self.
6. Long Skirts
This is out for those lovely people who want to want something that can be easy to throw on, but still keep you close to your deathly style. These can come in a variety of styles - like a simple business style to something with lots of ruffles - and when it starts to get cold, can be a great way to layer to keep your legs warm.
7. Black Dress
Whether you decide to go for a classic dress style, a funky piece, or an item that looks like it came from your dreams, it's always a classy piece to wear for any woman. For some pieces, you can wear just the dress (and shoes) and you are set - but with fall and soon to be winter approaching - layering with will be your best friend.
9. Tights/Stockings
Another great essential for all the lovely gothlings. Whether it is just for a statement to an outfits, or to keep the warmth from fleeing from your cold body, it's a guarantee as a keeper to many goths. And if you feel daring, try adding a fashion garter.
10. Belts
A simple accessory to have to have with any outfit. Whether you think that having a belt will keep your pants up, or it's a cool way to spice up those pants. I recommend some spiked belts, or at least a really cool belt buckle to make you shine.
11. Bags
A bag is a bit of a common essential (especially for those lovely ladies) and yet getting a bag/purse to really show off the style is a bit hard. Simple ones are always nice - and yet some crave for the statement that really pops out at others. Maybe one of those coffin bags or even a cute little bat-winged bag will suit your fancy, but you'll find something that you'll like.
12. Jewelry
Now jewelry (and other accessories) can usually make or break an outfit - especially for a goth. Trying to make sure your blacks are the same shade is already a hard taste - but then making sure your accessories all compliment each other AND going with the outfit - that's an even harder challenge. Some jewelry such as chokers, rings, bracelets, earrings, and other fashion pieces are usually your best bet. Whether they have skulls, crosses, witchy themes, horror/gore, or just plain simple crystals, these pieces will really pull your self together.
Now, to say the least, these are just some essentials that I think every goth should have. Whether you are more of a goth in the musical sense, or one who fully embraces the subculture, you are still a goth. There are so many different and unique ways to be and to express that, that no matter who you are or what you do, you are you. As long as you are happy, that is the most important.
