There are beautiful people in the world. God just randomly puts them in our lives sometimes, but we are just so busy with so many things to notice God in everything else. We are so quick to categorize everything as chance, or a coincidence, or fate, that we never think, "Oh, thanks God!" Even that! How many times do we actually think about God when we say, "oh my God!" or "thank God!" or "oh please God!"
When something awful happens, we hear everyone call out God's name. Is it a prayer? Are we really calling out to God to help with whatever we need? Because He can. Or are we saying His name because everyone else says it too? He knows everything, and to be honest, I think He is just waiting for us to love Him back. To not use His name for silly, insignificant things. To not use an expression of His name as if it had more importance than Him. He is not a "popular saying." He is beauty. He is love. He is peace.
Have you ever been in front of an altar? Or a sanctuary? In the presence of someone holy or full of God? Have you ever felt the peace of holding a new born baby in your arms? Have you ever felt the sun embrace you when you first walk out on a chilly morning? It sounds cheesy, I know, but God is there! He is everywhere. Some may say this sounds sentimental and overused, but is it? Do people actually know God is everywhere?
I met a friend, not more than a week ago. One of those friends that after just a conversation, you know they will be your friend for a long, long time. I went to mass a random day of the week, because I felt like I should. I had just taken a quiz, and it felt like the right way to say "thank you" to God. After mass, across campus, I met a girl. I had noticed her in church because she was wearing really cute boots. Random thing to remember, but I remember she stood out to me. After we sat down to talk, I learned that she was new to the school and was looking for friends. She mentioned that she doesn't usually attend daily mass, but that day she had because the priest recommended it to her. I usually don't go to daily mass, and I told her that I had just felt the need to go that day. There was something beautiful about the way she expressed herself. I didn't realize what was so curious about her until she said, "What a Godcidence, if we hadn't gone to mass today, we wouldn't have met".
That is what is specifically beautiful about her. Although, yes, otherwise she is very pretty, there is something about the way she talks that she makes me want to be a better person, a better friend. There is something about her that makes me want to go to mass and be friends with Jesus and thank Him for people like her.
Then another day, I took a second, and when I was leaving the chapel, and there was a lady cleaning. I just told her to tell her to have a good day. Usually, people smile and agree or wish you the same, but she started a conversation. When I was about to leave, she told me, "don't only have a good day, have a blessed day". And there I saw it too, the same simple beauty of a thirst for God. Someone I could genuenly go to if I ever needed prayer. A friend in the unlikeliest of places. The fact that a friend can pray for you can be the foundation for a stronger friendship that those that don't share a relationship that can bring you closer to Him.
Surround youself with people like that. Beautiful people who thirst for God. People who you can thank God for. Be friends with people who make you want to be in love with God the way they are. The kind of people who are everything but afraid to tell everyone they are in love with God. People who don't only say "God bless you" when you sneeze. Because, saying "oh my God" isn't a sin. Thinking the expression, the sum of its parts, is greater than the word, the name, God... that is the sin. The key to be happy, the key to be beautiful, is to surround yourself with people that realize that "Oh my God" is not an expression. It is a prayer, a beautiful prayer. What more humbling, simple, and enchanting prayer than acknowledging God. Letting Him know you know He is there. He knows what you need, or when you need it. Don't use His name in vain. Thank Him. Love Him. Cry out to Him. And for those times, when you can't find the words to speak to Him, all you really have to say is "Oh my God", and I believe that similar to what Saint Andrew Bessette used to say, “When you say to God, ‘Our Father,’ he has his ear right next to your lips.”
