Some have argued that Odyssey is essentially ripping-off their content Creators by having them write for free. I’d like to debunk that rumor right now and say that you can actually earn money. Hitting set numbers for page views and shares can translate into some serious cash. Second, changing Odyssey’s environment would mean stripping this opportunity for everything that makes it unique. There are some experiences that are worth more than just money.

You get to write what you want.

Odyssey is the voice of our generation—the unfiltered, unapologetic, purely raw voice. It doesn’t have an agenda other than letting content Creators hone in on their art form. I’ve never been told, “this is offensive, pick another topic,” by an editor.

You have free license to build a following.

Many of us are creative writing majors with big dreams. I’ve gotten to see several of my team’s content Creators receive shout-outs from best-selling authors as well as have their content go viral. The sky is the limit.

You learn how to promote yourself.

Before Odyssey, I would have maybe shared my work once. “Hey guys, if you could check out my latest article I would appreciate it.” *Runs and hides under a rock.* With Odyssey, I’ve learned to promote myself as well as learn the ins-and-outs of working with social media.

You have advancement potential.

In less than a year, I’ve gone from content Creator to Contributing Editor, responsible for assisting a team of writers to achieve their best potential. I’ve gotten to see my friend rise to Editor-in-Chief and shine in her role. I’ve gotten to be a part of this amazing team effort week after week to collaborate, innovate, and inspire.

I’ve made permanent friends.

Our paths may take us in different directions but our bonds never change. I’ve made some truly meaningful relationships writing for Odyssey. I feel like we are the X-Men of writers, working together to perfect our craft in a close-knit tribe that reminds us it’s okay to be ourselves.

It’s a resume booster.

Do you know what having "content Creator" and "Contributing Editor" feels like on your resume? Do you know how awesome it is to have my publications on my LinkedIn profile? Just the professional connections made from my experience with Odyssey alone have been invaluable to be.

It’s a branching-off point.

Odyssey content Creators are not expected to stay there forever. It’s a stepping stone to gain experience, build your craft, and have fun.

If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life.

Being a Contributing Editor is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Helping writers achieve their goals is never an inconvenience for me. Writing and being able to reach millions of people, provoke thought, and affect their lives is not work. It is the biggest gift. Generations from now when I’m gone, this will be my stamp into this world saying I was here.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
