It's crazy to think that 1 year ago, I was just starting writing for the Odyssey. Little did I know, how much of an impact it would be on my life.
I first began writing because I wanted to do it for fun. As a Communications major, writing is a big part of our work, but I wanted to choose what I wanted to write about, and not what my professors chose. This opportunity has helped me not only be more confident in my own writing but be comfortable talking about myself and sharing it with others. It's intimidating to think about, personal pieces, being shared onto Facebook where all your friends and family can see. Trust me, I wasn't so sure at first too. Then I thought about it. This is the perfect opportunity for me to write weekly for fun, and become more confident in publishing my work. So, I gave it a try, and here I am with 55 published articles, and now editor-in-chief of my community.
Let me tell you, it hasn't always been easy. From dealing with personal writer's block to communicating with creators across the country while I was abroad. Managing a team is challenging, but I have learned many valuable leadership skills. And of course, I couldn't have done it without my co-EIC. Although I have never met many of the creators on the team because we are all from different parts of the state, I feel as if I have a close connection with them from reading their articles. It's an amazing feeling when one of their pieces get shared on social media.
One of the most rewarding aspects I have gained from writing is how much I love sharing my writing now. One of my favorite pieces I wrote last summer, 25 Things You Hear At Endicott College, received over 1,000 shares. When writing the article, I had no idea it would be shared across campus, but I loved seeing it being shared throughout the week. Another piece that I am most proud of is A Letter To The Friend Who Told Me, "You're Worth It. This article was one of my most personal pieces because it was about someone important in my life. A week after it was published on my social media, it was shared on the official Odyssey Facebook page. I soon realized how relatable this article was related to other people.
No matter how long I keep writing, I have learned so much from this experience as a young writer. I learned the importance of sharing my work, and that there are people out there listening to what you say. So, to all the people who have helped me this past year, I thank you.
