As a new head coach, everything you say and do is going to be put under the microscope. The decisions you make, and the ways you motivate your team are going to define your career good or bad. For the most part, Giants new head coach Ben McAdoo has been saying all the right things and flying under the radar in the most media ridden area of the world. This week though he said something about Odell Beckham that ticked me off a little bit.
“He needs to control his emotions better and become less of a distraction to his self and his teammates.”
There is nothing wrong with that statement at all, in fact it’s a perfectly good statement and makes a lot of sense. My problem is why is that what he is focused on? Why is that what the media is focused on? I get the Beckham is the high profile guy that gets all the attention, but there are much more pressing matters. Sure Beckham blew up after Eli Manning threw an interception, but at least he didn’t blow up on the field. You want to talk about distractions. What about Weston Richburg? He committed two personal fouls on the field and was ejected from the game. What about the special team’s player that negated the blocked punt because he had to go after a Redskins player for no reason? That distracted the hell out of me. I was yelling for the next couple plays because of that.
You know what I wasn’t yelling at? the one guy whose passion for the game erupted out on the sidelines after his quarterback gave up the ball again. All eyes were on Beckham this game after what happened last year with Norman, and he was the one guy that didn’t do anything stupid. If anything, it’s better that he blew up on the sideline rather than keep in that pent up rage and release it on the field.
I have no problem with what McAdoo said, but Beckham cannot be the scapegoat for a Giants team that was awful and just completely out of control.
