An Ode To Chipotle

Things that Obama and I have in common? We both like Chipotle.

As I stand in line waiting for my chicken bowl with everything on it, I can think of at least 15 reasons why Chipotle will always have a place in my heart. So, without further ado, here are all those reasons.

1. The Chicken

I don’t know what it is about the way they grill that strange little bird, but it’s a little bit life-changing. Succulent, flavorful and the base of any good burrito or burrito bowl, Chipotle chicken, though flightless, passes every taste test with flying colors.

2. The Tunes

If you’ve ever walked into a Chipotle (and I really hope that you have), you’ve likely been greeted by the wonderfully strange music pouring from inside. It’s not your typical radio station and to this day I haven’t been able to track down the Chipotle playlist. All I know is that the alternative music is an much appreciated escape from the popular songs that surround me day after day.

3. The Architecture

Whoever designed the actual Chipotle restaurants has my vote of approval. The lights hang low, there’s metal and wood everywhere. In fact, the place is so earthy and chill that the only thing missing are a few actual trees. No fanfare, no nonsense—just simple food and elegant surroundings.

4. The Environmental Consciousness

Just about everything from Chipotle is recyclable and it gives me great satisfaction knowing that everything from the napkins to the aluminum foil that wraps those delicious burritos will experience a second life. With their farm fresh food, they stand behind the label of being “food with integrity” and in my book, nothing matters more.

5. The Humor

Have you read the napkins? The stories on sides of the cups? The captions on the website? If you’re still not sure what I’m talking about, try following Chipotle on Twitter. Whatever team takes the time to write these things is super hilarious and I appreciate the effort to make everyone's day a little brighter.

6. The Employees

Those people are highly trained, faster than Nascar drivers, and can usually be counted on to serve with a smile. It takes a lot of courage to handle such precious cargo, but the employees of Chipotle are up to the challenge. They’ve typically got awesome haircuts, cool vibes and according to the Chipotle website, there’s a whole lot of thought that goes into picking the Chipotle teams. Trust me Chipotle, it shows.

7. The Motto

Chipotle tries with all its might to live up to a certain standard and nothing could ever tear that down. They work to “cultivate a better world” and they aren’t joking around! I already mentioned their farm fresh produce and recyclable bowls, but did I mention they now refuse to serve genetically modified food, and back when they were they were, they were the first to disclose it? Yeah, I know—they bring tears to my eyes, too.

8. The Healthiness

Not only does GMO free, farm fresh food, that's prepared in a kitchen taste better, it’s better for you, too. That’s why another one of my favorite things about Chipotle is how good I feel eating there. While the occasional food baby may result in tunneling through an entire burrito bowl, at least I know that three-pound bundle of joy will be the healthiest baby around. Chipotle takes some of the guilt out of eating out. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.

9. The Innovation

Chipotle doesn’t seem the type to stick with something because “That’s how it’s always been done.” No, they change things up whenever they find a better way to do it. They took out GMO’s as soon as they could and they’ve started cultivating thought on every Chipotle bag and cup. They have a comedy series called "Farmed and Dangerous" that's next on my watch list along with an iOS game to promote the topic of fresh food. In all these ways and more they’re more than just a restaurant, they’re a movement.

10. The Design

Chipotle gives off this hipster, simplistic, rustic vibe. From the graphic design elements that I could geek out about for days to the humor they use in their advertisements; the vibe is slightly aloof, but not careless—a perfect balance.

11. The Guacamole

Let us all stop to appreciate the glorious guacamole given to us by Chipotle. Let your mind marinate on the awesomeness that is the chunks of fresh avocado mixed in with—wait—is that cilantro? A little lime? Yum. Moment over? OK, let’s move on.

12. The Aesthetic

When you put together awesome food, great design, funny jokes, skilled staff, cool music and an environmentally friendly mindset, you get a pretty neat aesthetic. Something about the Chipotle vibe has me coming back for more. Chipotle as a brand seems to represent the same things I do; changing the world a little bit at a time and having fun while you're doing it. If Chipotle were a person, they'd probably be a bearded bro who spent his time traveling the country with nonprofits. His name would probably be Pete and we'd definitely be friends.

13. The Portions

Let’s be real—Chipotle gives a lot more food than you really need in one sitting. In a typical Burrito or bowl, you get rice, beans, a meat/tofu, lettuce, tomato salsa, corn salsa, sour cream and cheese. Throw in some guac and a side of chips and you’ve got a feast. Full disclosure, I can eat a lot, but on a good day I could probably have one burrito bowl for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Of course, those burrito bowls are a little too good for just one, but if need be, I could make do.

14. The Benefits

Sign up for the Chipotle newsletter or their text message campaigns and you get free burritos and notifications about upcoming Chipotle events like Chiptopia. Waking up to a notification from Chipotle is a lot like receiving a text message from a good friend—except this friend is giving you burritos.

15. The Culinary Skill

Chipotle is just good cooking, which is something that every restaurant should be able to say. I like that at Chipotle I can see that good cooking with my own two eyes; the peppers being sautéed around in the big black pans, the chicken being swished around in the skillet, onions being cut, rice being made; the only thing more incredible than this amazing sight is the amazing smell that comes right along with it. Maybe if you close your eyes and whisper the words “beautiful burrito,” you can smell it now. Not working? Well, maybe you should head down to Chipotle.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
