Ode To Caviar And Bananas

Ode To Caviar And Bananas

I don't know about you guys, but whenever I throw out the restaurant name, Caviar and Bananas to someone not from Charleston or someone who doesn't go to the College, I tend to get some skeptical looks back. "Ew, what? Do they actually have caviar there? And bananas?" Well, it's their loss, because this gourmet, yet laid back market and cafe is an addiction that no one can shake.

Whether you're going for a quick breakfast before your 9 A.M. or grabbing a lunchbox before hitting the library, there probably isn't a day of the week that you aren't at Caviar and Bananas (or is that just me?). Located in the heart of the CofC campus, this place is a treasure and we all know it.

Here are just a few of my favorite things about Caviar and Bananas, in no particular order of course:

1. Bagels and Breakfast Foods

Don't hold the cream cheese, please! I can't stress the amount of satisfaction I get after biting into a flavorful everything bagel with the creamiest of cream cheeses out there. (And if you really pay attention to detail, don't you just love it how they cut it into four little pieces for you?) Don't forget about the oatmeal with eccentric ingredients like caramel and roasted granny smith apples, custom made breakfast sandwiches and burritos, fresh yogurt parfaits, and more. Even better? On Saturdays and Sundays, there's much needed brunch that is made to order; I like the whole grain pancakes and the egg white omelet, but hey, you can never go wrong here.

2. The Espresso Bar

There's just something about their coffee... Whether you get a latte with almond milk (Yes, they actually have almond milk! Take that, Starbucks), a homemade Chai tea latte, or just a plain hot or iced coffee, you will not be disappointed. They have a yummy selection of teas too!

3. The Bakery

If I really want to indulge, this section of Caviar and Bananas is my go-to. S'mores bars, homemade chocolate chip cookies, red velvet cupcakes, oh my! And that's just a few of the options. They're baked fresh daily and delicious, so stop by for a treat after class.

4. Prepared Foods

Kale salad (everyone's favorite, I must say), brussel sprout coleslaw, black truffle mac and cheese, Greek couscous, fresh salmon and chicken- need I say more? The best part is, if you get a "lunchbox", you can choose three or more of these amazing and delectable items. (I crave the pan-fried tofu). New, featured items occasionally pop up too, so don't be afraid to veer away from your comfortable selections and try something new!

5. Made-to-order Sandwiches

Who doesn't love a hot, greasy, gourmet sandwich, especially with all their own, chosen ingredients? Choosing one of the featured sandwiches is a magnificent idea too, but there's something about trying a bunch of different ingredients until you've found the perfect combo to suit your taste buds. Choose a protein like smoked turkey, chicken, or salmon (they even have duck!) and accompany it with some fresh veggies, spices, and homemade sauces or dressings, and you're good to go! (Hint: try the pesto.)

6. Made-to-order Salads

This is the same gist as the sandwiches, only without the bread of course. Not to mention, they have about 5 different greens to choose from! Just get that salad tossed up with some of your favorite toppings like edamame, roasted hazelnuts, chickpeas, organic egg, Parmesan cheese, and many more. Oh, and that dressing selection; Whether you choose Truffled Champagne or Apple-Cider Vinaigrette, or something more simple like Classic Cesar, you can't go wrong with these yummy salads.

7. Sushi

They have a super unique selection of sushi rolls and dishes like seaweed salad and spring rolls! You can even get a roll custom made. They don't stick to traditional ingredients for their rolls; Caviar and Bananas incorporates items such as coconut, basil, pineapple, and more.

8. Market Items

Caviar and Bananas isn't just for meals. Stop in and grab some organic and healthier groceries like Tate's Cookies and various snacks and drinks! Their charcuterie and artisanal cheese counter is also one not to be missed; you can even buy a baguette and enjoy the wine, cheeses, and meats right inside the cafe or at an umbrella table outside for a snack! So Paris.

I honestly do not know what I would do without this little market and cafe just steps away from my Charleston home, and I think I speak for many when I say that. In the mood for a fresh salad? Caviar and Bananas. Just need a quick coffee or pastry? Caviar and Bananas. The list goes on and on! I think we take advantage of this special place, because now that I think about it, I really don't know what I would do without it. Thank you, Caviar and Bananas!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
