Breast Cancer Awareness Month is set in October, and every year, sports teams across the nation support the cause by wearing pink and promoting awareness of breast cancer. Next year, according to the National Football League, teams will be given the choice of what cancer they will support during the month of October.
There are a lot of breast cancer awareness supporters and of course, I support awareness 100%. However, it does bother me that breast cancer is the only cancer that is made into such a huge spectacle during the month of October. Yes, breast cancer is a horrible, horrible disease. But there are so many different types of cancers out there in today's world, that every single one of them should be recognized.
This step taken by the NFL is a very good move, because it gives athletes a chance to support specific types of cancer that have affected them and/or their loved ones. According to ESPN.com, "The NFL, since 2009, has allowed players to wear pink accessories and has featured the color on fields and sidelines. While the NFL has raised almost $15 million for the American Cancer Society through its campaign, it also has drawn criticism from those who suspect the pink initiative is a way to make more money through merchandise sales." The month of October should not just be limited to breast cancer awareness, players and teams should have the choice of what they want to support and spread awareness for. This is an amazing move by the NFL, and I'm positive that it will have a positive impact. The proceeds for cancer awareness will not only go to breast cancer, but different types of cancers. Props to you, NFL.
