Many people look forward to Fall because it is officially flannel season, but other people use the month to spread awareness for many different causes. One important cause for the month of October is Down Syndrome Awareness. Many people are aware of Down Syndrome, but they are not educated about Down Syndrome. People who have Down Syndrome are not different from anyone else and they should not be treated in a different way.
Each year 6,000 children are born with Down Syndrome which is about 1 out of every 700 babies that are born. It is very sad to see someone or hear someone with Down Syndrome getting bullied. It is very sad because bullying does happen and that is why Down Syndrome awareness should be more well known.
Everyone needs to be aware that just because someone does not appear to be just like us, does not mean that they should be treated with any less dignity, respect, or kindness. Each and every person with Down Syndrome are an inspiration to the world. They are the light to the world that we all should strive to be. People with Down Syndrome are some of the nicest people that you could every cross paths with, and they always know how to make a persons day.
There are many ways that you can spread Awareness, but one big way is to participate is the Buddy Walk. The Buddy Walk is a short walk to helps build awareness for Down Syndrome by the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network. I have participated in the Buddy Walk this past weekend with my boyfriend and his family because his little brother has Down Syndrome. I have never met a little boy that has impacted my life as much as he has. He is always the breath of fresh air everyone needs and can instantly make someone's day. The Buddy Walk is more than just a walk, there are many games and activities for the children to do, including an adorable talent show.
