“Remember Wini, remember!”
Oh, sorry. I’m channeling my inner Sarah Jessica Parker aka Sarah Sanderson; a line I have recited nearly all of my life.
So, what is the month of October truly about?
It’s not about pumpkin spice lattés, hayrides, Halloween, candy or costume parties (although all of those October options are fantastic!) What the month of October is really about is Hocus Pocus. Yeah, I said it: Hocus Pocus. The childhood movie favorite that never gets old even after the 50th time you’ve watched it.... in one week.
You know you're guilty of it.
Waiting for October 1 to get here and feverishly checking your local TV listings to see how many times Hocus Pocus will be aired - the dates, times, all of the re-runs (or, if you're like me, you own the movie).
What is it about childhood movies that draws us to them time and time again? Are they just that good?
I think so, but I think it has to do more with the memories associated with them. I can picture myself right now, sitting in front of the TV in my family living room, in my pajamas, eating chocolate Pop-Tarts and watching Hocus Pocus with my mom. Although we may not reference those memories every time we watch our favorite childhood movie, that feeling of euphoria that comes over you is the genuine happiness of past memories. Those feelings are triggered when those opening credits come on and the music begins to play.
So, whether it’s The Sandlot, The Goonies, (pretty much all of the Disney movies) or Hocus Pocus, grant yourself the time to take the trip down memory lane. Think about all the good memories associated with that movie and whether it’s with your friends, partner or family, make your own memories so that each time you watch your favorite childhood movie, you’ll feel double the happiness.
Happy binging!
