Occupational Hazards of Being a Woman

It's a hard knock life for us.

Being a woman is both a blessing and a curse. We have many joys as women, but they're accompanied by struggles and hardships as well. Men may not ever know the joy of having freshly painted and manicured/ pedicured nails or slipping into a dress that fits just right. However, they are also spared a number of troubles that we face day-to- day as women.

1. Under-wires

Unless you pay big bucks for good bras, you run the risk of being stabbed at any moment.

2. Flat Iron/ Curling Iron Burns

No, it's not a hickey. I swear. It's a burn from my curling iron.

3. Mascara/ Eyelash Curlers/ Other Pokey Things Near our Eyes

It gets so close. One wrong move, and it's all over. It'll all be a mess, and you'll be temporarily blind.

4. HEELS

I don't know why we do this. We're killing our ankles.

5. Spanx or waist-trainers

Seriously, this is one of the MOST dangerous things women do. We squish our insides just to squish into an outfit. No, no, no.

6. Thin Wallets

Between disastrous wage gaps, luxury taxes on tampons (don't even get me started), makeup, bras, hair cuts, waxing, and just living, it's nearly impossible to build tons of wealth.

7. Back Problems

Big boobs and killer heels really strain our backs. So, if we don't feel like lifting something or just hurt, don't be surprised.

8. Medications with Scary Side Effects

Sometimes, our bodies just don't fuction properly. Okay, a lot of the time they don't. Most American women are on some form of birth control either for medical reasons or just to not have kids or a combination of both. These medications and devices are deemed safe, but they are risky. And, what works for your BFF could nearly kill you, and your doctor really won't know until you try. Sounds like a great adventure, huh?

9. Guilt

Elite Daily recently published a fabulous article on women feeling guilty about literally everything. In it, they state that, "96% of women feel guilty at least once a day." Whether you think someone is upset with you, you do something for yourself, you spend time with your significant other or your friends or even your family, life will give you a reason to think you are doing it wrong. We literally cannot win. No matter what, how much, or how little we do, it's not right, and we blame ourselves time and time again. 10. Rape/ Assault

No, this isn't just a female issue, but it is, unfortunately, a female-dominated one. We are always on high-alert. We walk with a key between our fingers in the parking lot while glancing over our shoulders. We stand with our backs against our locked cars while we pump gas. We stand firm and walk boldly past the creepy guy staring at the store. We do all of this, because we know that we are in very real danger every single day, and if something does happen to us, we are likely to be called liars and mocked in court.

11. Delayed Medical Diagnosis

"Listen Doc, I'm not pregnant. Yes, I'm sure. Last week. Yes. I'm sure. No, I'm not pregnant. No. No. Like I said, I'm sure. Just give me the cup." It seems like no matter what is ailing us, doctors, both male and female, automatically think we're preggo. They ask again and again and again. They ask until we either take a pregnancy test or get really angry and blunt with them. This takes extra time, costs more money, and delays our diagnosis and treatment. Oh, and don't forget this time we spend at the doctor's office is not paid for by our employers, not even at our discounted pay rate.

12. Ignored Mental Health Issues

After all of this stress and sometimes as a result of medications or hormones, we sometimes suffer from anxiety, depression, and a whole bunch of other mental illnesses. Unfortunately, some women do not receive the help they need because their doctors think they're fine. They insist that they're just "going through normal female emotions," or " being a woman." Well, if being depressed or anxious or both, is "being a woman", count me out.

13. Emotional Strain

Guilt, fear, disrespect, hormonal issues, it all stacks up and can be very taxing on our emotions. And, don't forget drama. WOmen are always battling self-worth issues and occasionally take it out on each other. Why, just why?

14. Sleep Deprivation

The National Sleep Foundation says that women need more sleep than men. Unfortunately, between feelings of guilt, multitasking, taking care of children, doing household chores, and even PMS symptoms, women typically get less.

15. Big hearts, strong spirits, hard-heads, and queenship.

It's a rough life, but we live it well. We grow from each struggle, and we make it work. God knew this world needed women, and that men couldn't do life alone. God gives his greatest battles to his strongest soldiers. So ladies, put on your Wonder Woman gear, pray for strength, straighten your crown, and go into this world as the queen that you are. You deserve it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
