Real Talk: I Have An Obsession With Oranges

I am sure you can all relate to this in some way, we all have that food that makes us feel happy and gitty inside.

Oranges make me feel happy. They give me energy when all I want to do is collapse on the floor and sleep.

Oranges have been an important part of my college experience. I have probably spent 56% of my dining dollars on oranges (and 20% of it on hummus, but that is for a different article.)

My favorite orange breed is the "Golden Nugget Mandarin" which is found in stores between March-July. I haven't had one since June; I went to India for a month and when I got back, they were gone. I am patiently waiting for March 2017.

Anyways, in honor of oranges and their greatness, here is a list of 20 reasons to try to explain my non-explainable love towards this delicious fruit.

  1. Marvels created a "captain citrus" superhero in 2014.
  2. Oranges have the most logical name. Fruits like kiwis and papayas are why kids drop out of school these days.
  3. Ant-man asked for orange slices in Captain America: Civil War because oranges are the best fruit to consume to recover being defeated (by finals).
  4. They are the sweetest and softest fruit in the world.
  5. Oranges help your brain focus: an orange a day will make sure the only "C" you get is the vitamin kind.
  6. You can juice them easily.
  7. There are so many ways to eat them. Try this method. It is brilliance.
  8. They smell as good as they taste.
  9. "Orange flavor" actually tastes like oranges... not cough syrup.
  10. Oranges are safe to feed to dogs.
  11. Oranges are one of the only fruits my dog, Google, will actually eat because they smell and taste good.
  12. Cold oranges on a summer day: all I need to say.
  13. They come in CUTE sizes (a.k.a cuties).
  14. Apparently, oranges are actually part of the berry family. They are just obese, plump berries.
  15. Vitamin C. Oranges have a lot of it.
  16. The highest demand of fruit per person in America is for oranges.
  17. The health benefits are real: clears your skin, rich in nutrients, decreases risk of cancer, lowers blood pressure, improves immunity, lowers cholesterol, protects the heart, high in fiber, good for your hair, benefits your eyes.
  18. They are scientifically proven to make people happy!!
  19. You don't need to use a knife. They are the finger food of fruit.
  20. Oranges are widely available EVERYWHERE. Don't expect to walk into Whole Foods and find some cut up guava... because I can tell you right now, they won't have that.

Orange you glad oranges are the best fruit ever.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
