5 Reasons To Be Obsessed With Baylor

So, as many of you know, I attend Baylor University and I absolutely love it. Going so far away to school, I honestly was terrified that I would not find my place here. I ended up finding something better than my place; I found my home. Here are my top five reasons why I am so obsessed with my school.

1. The Community

Community is important to any student. Without loving community, many would not thrive in college. While college is said to be the best years of your life, it also presents you with new challenges and many sleepless nights. Community has been so important in helping me through these times. The people that you find at Baylor are some of the most caring and outgoing people that I have ever met. It is not uncommon to meet a new friend in line for Starbucks or for Memorial. Everyone is so friendly and recognizes that we're all in this together.

2. The Professors

All around the nation, professors are known for being hardheaded and insensitive towards their students. At Baylor, I have found professors who are nothing less than genuine and loving people. They truly care about you as a person and are concerned with shaping you into the person that you are meant to be. They want to see you succeed. They want to get to know you. Between getting to know a professor through office hours or meeting with them to get ice cream, they truly want you to fulfill your calling and make your time at Baylor worthwhile.

3. The Academics

Regardless of what field that you are going into, Baylor prepares students insanely well. They want you to know the material and be able to apply it to everyday situations. More than shaping you to be full of knowledge, they want you to become a critical thinker. They want you to be well educated and to be able to see all perspectives of an idea before making any decisions. Students are taught to not look at ideas through a narrow tunnel, but to expand their thinking and to use research as a tool.

4. The Campus

I may be slightly biased, but I believe that Baylor is the most beautiful college campus. The buildings are so gorgeous and I love walking around campus. Hearing Pat Neff's sweet bells all over campus whether you are in class or heading to your next is one, it is one of my favorite things. Our campus is so well kept and the Texas weather makes it even better. I always know that I am perfectly at home and am welcomed with open arms here.

5. The School Spirit

Like our alma mater says, "we'll fling our green and gold afar." Whether you are an alumni, a current student, or faculty, you bleed green and gold. You can tell just how deep that our school spirit runs when it comes to homecoming events. People come from all over the nation to be a part of it! We take pride in our school and all that it stands for. Nothing is better than a sic 'em at McLane or a Baylor connection wherever you are traveling. We love our bears and we love this University!

Needless to say, my love for Baylor runs deep. I am insanely blessed to attend such an incredible institution.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
