This article goes out to everyone who does not consider him or herself to be a "Swifty."
Yes, she does have a multi-million-person media following. Yes, she does have multiple top-hit records. Yes, she has been involved in multiple media scandals. Yes, she has a loyal fandom which validates her stardom.
But not everyone is obsessed with -- or even a fan of -- Miss Swift as those devoted Swifties. So don't try to make those of us who aren't feel bad about expressing our opinion.
I have never been the most fanatic Taylor Swift follower, and the minutiae of attraction I felt to her has been dwindling for a while now. Her "Red" album was the only era I truly enjoyed listening to and about her. Being in college, especially, has distanced me from the Swift following. I simply have very little time to keep up with pop-culture, much less care about it.
Recently, though, it feels like every source of media is being overrun by news about Taylor Swift's new album, "Reputation", and I cannot seem to escape it.
Despite my natural aversion to music videos, I have seen two of hers within the span of a week. My friends literally dragged me to the ground and made me sit and watch the videos with them. They wondered why I wasn't as excited as they were about the digital "masterpieces" displayed on the LED screen.
My answer was simple, "I just don't love Taylor Swift."
They gasped so forcefully one would have thought that I had just announced the advent of World War III.
It was as if they never thought of the possibility of people in this world who did not enjoy Taylor Swift.
Well, I am here to speak of for those of us who don't. I know you exist, and while you might feel small in the midst of this Taylor-turning world, know that you are not. There is at least one person out there who shares your opinion: me.
I know the things you'd rather be discussing: politics, global warming, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas shopping, frogs, turtles, the economic stability of Guatemala... probably literally anything else besides a certain tall, blonde celebrity.
I know that times are tough now and the media is frustrating and overwhelming, but the tides will turn. This Swift news will get washed away with the flowing river of pop-culture scandals so quickly it will feel like no time.
Just keep your chin up, hustle, and hold firm in your opinion. It is hard to go against a populous, especially one as vigorous as the Swifty fandom, but your time will come. Keep pushing the real issues. The issues that matter to you. Someone has to. And if we work together, those issues will be voiced and take over the media platform that is so often held in reserve for petty drama.
So fight on, you non-Swifty, you. I salute you.
