“Obama Out.” And then the signature mic drop. That’s how the White House Correspondents’ Dinner ended after President Obama verbally grilled Donald Trump. However, Trump was not the only one burned by the President. Obama also took on the Republican Party, candidates, and surprisingly even the Democratic candidates. Notably, he took a jab at Clinton’s slogan comparing it to her rival, Bernie Sanders' signature slogan, “Feel the Bern.”
Obama poked fun in saying her’s was “Trudging up a Hill,” as a play on of her name. Sanders attended the rally, but Trump was nowhere to be seen, possibly because of a similar joke-attack last time. Obama was surprised and remarked on his absence. "I am a little hurt he's not here tonight," Obama said. "We had so much fun the last time. And it is surprising -- you have a room full of reporters, celebrities, cameras. And he says no. Is this dinner too tacky for The Donald? What could he be possibly doing instead? Eating a Trump Steak? Tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel? What's he doing?"
Clearly, the President is not afraid to speak freely about Donald Trump especially. It seems like that is true for just about everyone, news outlets, reporters, and everyday people as well as the President of our country. Why is that? I believe It is because Trump is such an outlandish character and seems to be the least realistic in his plans.
As the President himself said, “There is so much to make fun of.” When he made that statement he was also reffering to this political race in general. All of the contenders are unique and vary with different backgrounds, ages, religious and more. This has been the most diverse race in a long time. 2016’s Race has given viewers a lot to take in, and plenty of new materials for comedians and President’s alike.
It was made clear months ago that Obama did not believe that Donald Trump would be our next president. This is clear through his jokes, and through his more serious words as well. At the Correspondents' Dinner he alluded to the fact that Hillary Clinton would be the winner. Obama joked, "No clue about the next President of the United States. We don't know who she is."
The Correspondents' Dinner is an annual Presidential dinner held in the White House. It is a lax event and gives D.C. a chance to be hip. Celebrities, politician's and more mingle, laugh and relax at this event making light of an extremely serious duty to America. Clearly, Obama enjoyed himself and got his opportunity to take himself less seriously than most politicians.
