Adelphi Students: Live, Learn And Intern In NYC
Adelphi University

Adelphi University has recently announced a new program, NYC Scholars, that allows students to live, learn and intern in NYC. Similar to a study abroad program, NYC Scholars is offered for a semester term for students who have earned a minimum of 15 credits with Adelphi University and focuses on fostering an immersive and life changing experience.

Created by Shawn O'Riley, Dean of the University College, and Jennifer Ganley, Director of NYC Scholars, High School and Pre-College Programs, the program offers Adelphi students the chance to get the true NYC Experience.

"We wanted to give students the experience of living, learning and interning in the city. The classes aren't traditional. For example, in the Off-Broadway class you will go and see shows." Says Ganley. "That's what's most exciting for me. You're getting immersed in what the city has to offer."

For the Fall 2017 term, the first semester this program is being offered, some of the classes available are Food Justice and Policy, Comic Vision, Oceans, Ethnicity, Off-Broadway, Social Change and Introduction to Creative Writing.

A key feature of these classes: Because they are Adelphi classes they are taught by existing faculty and fulfill some of the general requirements so students can rest assured that they are on track.

Not only are there many field trips for students to explore the city, but every student is given an internship in their desired field of study.

"It's more about finding the student who wants to join us in this immersive experience, who wants to be in and about and out in the city, than the student who wants to sit in their dorm all day." O'Riley told me.

By paying just a bit more (around $650) per semester than a typical resident student, you are given housing in Brooklyn Heights with other Adelphi Students, an unlimited Metrocard, access to museums and Broadway shows and an internship.

Pretty cool huh?

If you're interested in the NYC Scholars program for the Fall 2017 semester, Apply by February 15 or contact Jennifer Ganley.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
