Getting around the fast-paced and crazy New York is a challenge that all New Yorkers face in their own way. You have the people who take an Uber to Duane Reade a block away, basically having their own personal car secure that takes them door to door wherever they are trying to go. On the other end of the spectrum, you have those who refuse tho put themselves in any type of transportation vehicle that might make things at all easier for them in any way; at least they're probably in decent shape from all that walking (?). I cannot call myself fortunate enough to sit in my own personal carriage (or a cab) everywhere I go, nor would I want to; New York City's public transportation system has my heart, and my wallet, when it comes to getting around this place.
The smoggy wind zipping through your hair as a train arrives, watching the rats scurry around just bellow you, rubbing thighs with strangers -- there is no question that the subway is one of the most beautiful experiences that NYC has to offer. Swiping through the turnstile brings a feeling of pure excitement. Will I have to wait 15 minutes and be late to class? Will the train come right away, and will there even be room on the train? Will someone push me onto the tracks? The possibilities are endless and make for a spontaneous and adventure-filled trip.
The bus is a whole other ball park entirely. You're above ground, and you can see all that New York has to offer outside your window. Waiting outside in the cold makes it even more rewarding once the warm and cozy bus finally comes. And hey, if you're cutting it close and see the bus about to leave, you can save your energy by not running after it, because it most certainly will not wait for you!
So to those of you who avoid mass transit with every fiber of your being, you've got it all wrong. And in all seriousness, we New Yorkers are lucky to have a system running 24 hours to get us where we've got to go, as long as they stop raising the price.
