As college students, we are presented with a number of opportunities for the summer. We have the ability to travel abroad and fill internship positions as well as make money in our favorite summer jobs. In the free time we have, it is important to enjoy summer-y things. Having grown up in New Jersey, traveling to NYC for long weekends or day trips has always been part of my summer adventures. This summer, here a few places and activities to be sure not to miss!
1. Smorgasburg
If you are obsessed with food then make sure to attend the Smorgasburg event in Brooklyn. There will be numerous tents and food trucks exhibiting all different types of food! It's opened every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The NY Times called it "The Woodstock of Eating."
2. Good Morning America Concerts
Taking place in Central Park, every Friday from May 20-September 2 at 7 a.m. there will be free concerts. These concerts are not to be missed as artists such as Sia, Ariana Grande, Flo Rida, and so many more will be performing!
3. Central Park SummerStage
If the concerts held by GMA are not what you are looking for, there are also concerts held at night throughout the week. SummerStage holds a variety of concerts featuring artists such as Cage the Elephant, Phillip Phillips, and Matt Nathanson. Tickets are located at Ticketmaster.
4. The Freedom Tower
To experience what it means to be a proud American, visit the Freedom Tower located in downtown. If you want a spectacular view of the city, there are tickets available to ride to the top of the tower to look out over Lower Manhattan. There is also a memorial museum on the 9/11 site as well.
5. Whitney Art Museum
Also located downtown is the Whitney Museum of American Art. While there are many art exhibits to see, the Whitney is one of a kind. It features contemporary art created throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
On a nice summer day, there is nothing more refreshing than walking outside and admiring the NY skyline. The best place to do this is the High Line. The High Line is located Downtown and runs parallel to the skyscrapers. Where the path widens, there are benches to admire the artwork on the buildings' sides.
Located beneath the High Line is Chelsea Market. The market is filled with artisans, vendors, and delicious food options. Options range from hand-crafted jewelry to world-renowned to-go food options.
New York City is filled with an endless amount of opportunities. The seven options listed are just a few of my favorite places to visit. Yet, no matter what you chose to occupy your time with, you will never cease to be amazed!
