I will never forget the day that my broadcasting teacher announced to my class that we will be going to New York City for a journalism conference. I was absolutely elated and ran home like a kid in a candy store because I had always wanted to visit New York, and my parents knew that. It took 24 hours before they gave me the go ahead to fly to NYC with my fellow classmates and a few chaperones to attend the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's annual journalism conference. Going into the week, I knew that it would be life altering. At this point in my life, I knew I wanted to be a journalist, and I wanted to go to college to study just that. I wanted to go on this trip for obvious reasons, but one of the most important being to get my feet wet in my future career path, and to grow closer with those in my broadcasting program. And I did just that and so much more.
There isn't a week that goes by that I don't think about my trip at least once. I made so many memories with the students on this trip, and I grew a deeper relationship with my beloved broadcasting teacher. I learned and met experts that have been in this field for a lifetime, and they knew just what to do to insure success in this rapidly growing field. One of my favorite professionals I met was Ginger Zee, the meteorologist from Good Morning America. I was familiar with who she was because she had made an appearance on TLC's Say Yes to the Dress, so of course I did a little bit of research on how she got into the big time of being on GMA. When we went to the early morning taping of GMA, we went during a blizzard. I knew standing there freezing everything off that I had, I was not leaving until I spoke to Ginger. So what did I do? I touched her arm so that she would turn around after taping, and asked her to take a picture with myself and a few other broadcasting students.
This was the single most proud moment of my life, because later on we got Ginger to do our school's broadcasting slogan on camera so we could show it on our daily show. Btw, yes. I WAS SO COLD.
While in NYC, we had the opportunity to "knick it" courtside at the Knicks game. I had never been to a pro basketball game, but we went to the Garden and this experience is one I'll never forget. I got to see Jimmy Fallon at the game, along with Ice Cube.
Since I want to go into sports broadcasting, this was a very special experience for me and it taught me a lot about what goes into the production of a professional basketball game.
And this is the moment that I knew my life had changed. When I could picture myself living in this beautiful city for my adult life.
