For as long as I can remember, I have had an obsession with New York City. (I think it started when my obsession with the show Friends started.) I have always wanted to live there, be a big name in publishing, and just soak up all of the City's energy. I've been there three times and each time I only feel more convinced that I belong there. A huge factor in me wanting to live there is how festive it is during the holiday season. Here are a few things the Big Apple has to offer during the most wonderful time of year.
1. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Once Santa passes the Macy's on 34th in the Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Christmas season has officially begun!
2. The Tree Lighting
Every year, Rockefeller Center has a tree-lighting ceremony, and it's usually the second "start" to the Season. This year, the ceremony was on November 30th and the tree will stay up until January 7th.
3. Ice Skating
There's Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, Wollman (Central Park)...New Yorker's love their ice skating. Feel free to act out movies like Serendipity and Home Alone 2 while you're at it!
4. Horse carriage rides through Central Park
What is more gorgeous than this, especially in snow? It's nice for tourists and natives alike. (Note: they are considering banning the carriage rides during winter months because of the atrocious weather conditions.)
5. The Rockettes
The Radio City Rockettes are a staple New York City tradition to see during the Christmas season. Do you know of any one else who can high kick in unison with over thirty people?
6. The snow/weather in general
While natives of New York or northern states in general who normally receive snow during winter are used to this, those travelling from states who rarely get snow love the weather during the Season. I know the snow usually sucks and can put dents into travelling plans, but I mean...it's just so pretty! (And you can take cool pictures like this!)
7. Fifth Avenue decorations
Fifth Ave is known for its shopping, and one can only imagine how much busier it is during Christmas. All over Fifth Ave are decorations like giant tree ornaments and lights, but Saks has its very impressive Christmas window display each year that's definitely worth checking out.
8. The Ball Drop
To round out the season is the famous New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square. At least a million people fill up the area to watch this event. It's safe to say it's probably on every one's bucket list to be here for this at least once in their life.
In case you happen to be travelling to New York City for the Season, hopefully you take advantage of one of these events! Enjoy it for me!
