"Combining sisterhood and continuing friendships"
On January 18th, 2017 the Panhellenic dynamic at University of North Alabama changed forever. On that day, the Alpha chapter of Nu Alpha was officially accepted as an organization.
Nu Alpha is a club that consists of transfer sorority initiates whose sorority does not have a chapter on campus. The ladies of Nu Alpha are extremely excited to start this "Nu" chapter of our lives.
The main purpose of a sorority is to provide long-lasting friendships and sisterhood. Sororities and Greek life, in general, build a community. Within each organization you get a mentor, if you are in a sorority a "Big". You become close to your pledge class, which makes it easier to make friends in a college atmosphere. Greek life is one big community that supports each other with philanthropic events.
Being a transfer student is not the easiest feat in general, but for transfers from Greek life who went from having a large group of friends and support group to knowing practically no one on campus it is a big deal (not that it is not in general).
This organization began with senior Public Relations and Marketing major Kallie Rose Butler and faculty advisor Dr. Beth Garfrerick (Dr. G). Their endeavor expanded to include: Morgan Hoover, Caroline Hargett, Corban McMillian, Randee Miller, Tessa Morgan, Hayley Clay, and myself.
The goal of Nu Alpha is to provide homes for ladies that miss their chapter. In extension, giving opportunities for involvement on campus and to participate in social events.
Just a few facts about Nu Alpha:
Nu Alpha is the first organization that is known to provide a home for transfer sorority initiates.
Core values include wisdom, honor, and loyalty. Loyalty is for loyalty not only to each of their individual sororities but to Nu Alpha, too. Honor for the honesty, fairness, and integrity in their beliefs and actions. Wisdom to always use good judgment and succeed academically.
The fox is Nu Alpha's mascot. The fox demonstrates wisdom and adaptability. Wisdom is one of the core values and learning to adapt to a new school is an important element for transfer women.
The yellow rose is Nu Alpha's flower. The yellow rose represents friendship and new beginnings.
In the future, Nu Alpha plans to expand to other universities around the country, so every transfer sorority initiate can find their home away from home. If anybody is interested in a Nu Alpha chapter on their campus you can email us at una.nualpha@gmail.com.
