Then vs. Now: 2006 to 2016

My, how the times have changed.

Boy, how the times have changed. A decade has passed, yet it went by faster than ever imagined. Our society has transformed from a time of flip phones and Myspace to hover-boards and front-facing cameras.

Here are a few examples of how our world has progressed in a time period of many advancements and altercations:

1. Selfies

Then:

Now:

"Selfies" first gained popularity as a way to simply take a picture of yourself when there was no other person in the room to take the picture for you. The "selfie" is now used individually to take a picture of oneself with the use of a front-facing camera. People are obsessed with the idea of perfecting the most flawless photo based on one's facial expression, angle, and lighting.

2. Miley Cyrus

Then:

Now:

It's amazing how one decade can truly change a human. She was an actress/singer/songwriter that began her pre-pubescent years with pure songs and blond wigs on a hit Disney Channel TV show. Now, with an ex-fiance and most of her hair cut off, she is most commonly known for her deviant behavior and shocking outfit selection. My, how the tables have turned.

3. Hair on Guys

Then:

Now:

Men have changed their fashion sense in many ways over the years, however they seem to have found a new-found appreciation for the "Jesus" look as they have transformed from shaggy, short hair to long, pulled-back buns or lengthy, flowing locks. Guys seem to think that catching food in their fluffy beards makes them appear more attractive, but it is quite the contrary.

4. Justin Bieber

Then:

Now:

This guy transformed from baby cute to hot real quick. After the downfall of the "Bieber hair," otherwise known as swooping, well-combed, neck-achingly flipped hairstyle, Justin spent a large portion of his post-pubescent years discovering the ideal style and color of his hair to reveal his bad boy appearance to the world. His voice might have dropped a couple octaves, yet he still draws the ladies.

5. Transportation

Then:

Now:

Life was a lot simpler when technology was out of the picture. Gone are the days of impressing your elementary school crush by smoothly gliding past them. Nowadays, people make fools of themselves by rolling in circles to awe all those who will watch. It isn't uncommon to see people riding their hover-boards to class because simply taking the time to walk is just too much effort.

6. Social Media

Then:

Now:

MySpace was originally created for aspiring bands and musicians to share music to one another, however it quickly blossomed into a networking site for people to post blogs, photographs, videos, and news. This beginning media outlet was rapidly diminished which brought the introduction to FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, and a multitude of other networking resources. Thus, the introduction to social media sprouted across the world and only continues to develop.

7. Zac Efron

Then:

Now:

This guy went from 0 to 100 real quick. Most commonly known among youths for his appearance in all three High School Musical movies, Zac gained popularity for his voice, emotional appeal, and athleticism. As the years have progressed, there is no doubt that his muscles are the reason for his massive, and increasingly growing fanbase.

8. Female Hair

Then:

Now:

The introduction to hair streaks is one for the books. Beginning as a way to have equally brunette and blonde hair, it has transformed into a style that indicates diversity and uniqueness. People of all genders use colored hair dye to stand out and add some brightness to their hair. Why have simply one color when you could have multiple?

9. Denim Jeans

Then:

Now:

Different from the 1970s, a less wide-legged jean style made a comeback in the early 2000s. Slightly ripped, their light denim demeanor was all the craze. As the years have progressed, the style of ripped jeans has increased incessantly. Interestingly enough, the rips are much larger and the actual jeans cover much less skin. We now live in a time period where people strive to own as tight of pants as possible. Why wear ripped jeans when you could simply wear shorts and still be just as cold or just as warm?

We are a continuously evolving world and it will only proceed to develop as the years continue to pass. It is amazing how people change, technology improves, and styles are altered. I, for one, can't wait to see what the year 2026 holds.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
