Self-Expression-Noun; the expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, especially in writing, art, music, or dance it’s something that we all have the ability to take part in.
Without self-expression, our lives would lack a variety of things such as spontaneity, beauty and emotion. Many people take to expressing themselves in ways as simplistic as writing — which is something I do. Many people publish their thoughts and express their views via social media networks or online magazines, having the internet serve as a blank canvas, free to express one's self. To many, self-expression is the meaning of life. To Jelani Williamson, self-expression is the only thing keeping him alive.
Jelani Williamson and Zachary Currie, are rising juniors at the University of Georgetown who have recently decided to take their creativity to the next level and launch a website of their own, Nous Culture, otherwise known as “something for us.” The reasoning behind Nous Culture was to create an inclusive culture that puts together different aspects of urban life while prompting positivity. Nous Culture primarily focuses on grassroots underground fashion, art, music and footwear. The Nous Culture team strives to create and cultivate their own culture for people who typically don’t fit into the traditional cultural molds of society.
Within days of launching their website, Nous Culture went viral. Nous Culture brings the most forward and relevant information into the industry and it’s important to have a website such as Nous Culture to do so. Many people are interested in the type of information Nous Culture displays but they’re alone when it comes to those interests and don’t have a friend base to enjoy them with. As Nous Culture grows its community component, it gives these type of people a support network.
Williamson and Currie have come in contact with many well-known artists in both the music industry and fashion industry such as the award winning, Grammy-nominee and rapper Wale and rapper Lil' B (otherwise known as The BasedGod).
When it comes to reaching out to artists, Williamson says he tries to be as transparent and opportunistic as he can, as well as reaches out to the artists as honestly as he can. In other words, when reaching out in ways that are most convenient for the artist, they’re usually more receptive. Nous Culture focuses on working with artists who are really good at their craft, people can learn from, and bring something unique to the industry, whether that may be their music or style.
