All I Want For Christmas Is You - A Letter From The Person Who Wants Nothing

I honestly don't want much this holiday season - just the company of my loved ones!

“I don't want a lot for Christmas

There is just one thing I need

I don't care about the presents

Underneath the Christmas tree

I just want you for my own

More than you could ever know

Make my wish come true oh

All I want for Christmas is you”

-All I Want For Christmas, Mariah Carey

A lot of people probably just take these lyrics as something to dance and sing your heart out to during the Christmas season, but what about people who consider it as something more? Something literal.

Personally, I have more junk in my possession than I even know. I randomly find doo-dads that I didn’t know about literally every time I clean my room. For me, I don’t want anything material for Christmas. As the holiday approaches, it’s something I have to tell people over and over. Just the other day, I was asked what I want and my instinct is to say nothing, but I know the person asking will always find something to give, regardless of what I say. The go-to: gift cards. You can’t go wrong with gifting money. But the thing is, I don’t NEED anything. Most of what I end up buying will eventually go to waste, though I admit I’ve had a couple things in my Amazon shopping cart for a while now (who doesn’t??).

Honestly, when I say I want nothing, I mean it. I don’t need material possessions to have a happy holiday season. I’d love nothing more than to spend time with the people I love, doing things we enjoy doing together. This year, Christmas at my house won’t be spent playing with new toys, but by enjoying each other’s company. Spending time with my family, friends, and partner makes me happier than any present could. Okay, I admit opening presents does bring a certain joy, but there’s just something about spending quality time with loved ones that warms the soul.

I really don’t want a lot for Christmas. Instead of giving me something, how about we do something together? We can watch holiday movies, go sledding and play in snow, bake festive cookies, and warm up with hot chocolate. You can surprise me with a date instead of a gift!

So I think I speak for most who admit to wanting nothing for Christmas when I say that I just want your company! I won’t deny a gift from the ones I love and the ones who love me, but I need nothing more than your companionship this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah/Ramadan/Kwanzaa, Joyous Solstice (and whatever else you may be celebrating this winter season), and a Happy New Year!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
