10 Ways You Know You Grew Up At The Beach

As each season passes, all I want and think about is being on a beach or riding the waves. I never lived 5-10 minutes from the beach, but more like 2 hours from Jones. However, I grew up in a beach bum family and that means each summer I get multiple trips to the beach. I was meant to live in the water or perhaps just be a mermaid so I can live in the ocean 24/7. A lot of people do not like swimming in the oceans because they are scared of sharks, fish or any other sea creature. Along comes all of the reasons and emotions any beach bum will understand and experience.

1. The First Thing You Do Is Test The Water.

No matter the weather outside, the first thing you do at the beach is to test the water. You just want to feel the amazing water and the sand between your toes. The only thing that matters is the water condition.

2. You Only Use Tanning Oil.

Being a beach bum also comes with the luxury of barely getting like a lobster, but more like a perfect tan. In this case, you barely use regular sun tan lotion because your skin never needs it.

3. You Love Rough Waves.

When the lifeguards tell everyone that "swimming is prohibited", you get very excited. Nothing is better than big, aggressive waves that challenge you and your swimming. The feeling of being tumbled under a wave and riding those currents are priceless moments.

4. When Friends Don't Like The Water.

When you're at the beach with your friends and no one wants to swim with you. You don't understand how someone does not like swimming.

5. You Never Want To Leave.

The beach is your home and you just wanna stay there all day and night.

6. All You Dream About Is Having A Beach House.

Your only wish and goal in life are to own a beautiful beach house that is smack on the beach. You ignore everyone telling you that you need to be rich because at that moment you do not care.

7. Your Dream Wedding Is On A Beach.

All your life you have wanted to get married on the beach and you will continue having this dream until your wedding. "I just want a simple, small wedding on the beach so I can go barefoot".

8. Endless Memories Of Riding Waves With Your Dad.

All of your beach memories are with your dad and he is the person who taught you how to ride the waves. Without these memories, you would not be a beach bum and you wouldn't be able to handle the killer waves.

9. Sharks Don't Keep You From Swimming.

All of those shark warnings never stop you from swimming and going into the water. In all honesty, I won't be afraid of any sharks until I do see one.

10. Beach Hair+Tan= Perfection.

You just love the way you look when you are tan and have the best beach hair. Your confidence goes up like ten levels.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
