A Note on Freshman Year

High school seniors, it only gets better.

A Note on Freshman Year
Ashley Hughes

I did not expect college to have any kind of impact on me. I planned on moving in, getting my degree, and getting out. Friends, hobbies, new interests, everything else was optional - really not needed to reach my end goal of a diploma.

This year made me a new person. The second day of freshman orientation I met my other half, the Christina to my Meredith, at a fried dough truck. She has taught me that some friendships will be unbreakable and filled with show tunes. I learned that your girls will see you cry, and cry with you. I learned that I am the mom of the friend group, and I love every second of watching everyone shine. I learned how easy it is to make friends, and to end the year with people you did not start the year with - and leave some behind. You will watch your best friend from home find her place, and her people. College will teach you that it's okay to spend $11 on an organic salad AND go out to a diner at 3am on the same day. College will bring you and your boyfriend closer than ever, knowing that your love is stronger than anything that can be thrown at you. To the guy friends I made, you know who you are, thank you for always rapping with me and hosting movie night. And whenever you need, you know the song 'Closer' will quickly bring you back to the beginning of this amazing, terrifying, wonderful rollercoaster of a year.

I learned that I miss my family and dog every day, but the incredible people you surround yourself with make college not only bearable - but amazing.

So, I know you might be thinking that you peak in high school and it all goes downhill from there. High school is just the beginning, it isn't the end. Sophomore year will bring a new set of memories, with a great roommate and this gaggle of friends by my side. I love you all. Thank you. Long live Amigas!!!

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
