Last week, the Sun Belt Conference released the full schedule for the 2016 football season. There are intriguing matchups that should provide a lot of excitement. There are the rivalry games and some new matchups that Georgia Southern will experience. Here are some of the notable games Georgia Southern will play.
Arkansas State (Oct. 5)
This game will be played at Arkansas State on Wednesday, Oct. 5. It will be a primetime game shown on ESPN2. This game is intriguing because Arkansas State won the conference in the previous season and the Eagles will more than likely have to beat them to win the Sun Belt the upcoming season. Even though Georgia Southern has been in the conference for two years, they have never faced Arkansas State in a conference.
Georgia Tech (Oct. 15)
This game will be played at Georgia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 15. The last time these two played it was a barn burner. Georgia Tech got out to a huge lead in the first half, but Georgia Southern stormed back in the second half to eventually take the lead. Georgia Tech ended up scoring a touchdown in the closing seconds to knock off the Eagles. It is sure to be an even better matchup this time as Georgia Southern has gotten better since that game.
Appalachian State (Oct. 27)
This game will be played on Thursday, Oct. 27. There does not need to be much explanation on why this is a big game. The two teams are bitter rivals and do not like each other. It will be a primetime telecast on ESPNU. This game will be tough for Georgia Southern because they will be coming off a short week after traveling to New Mexico State. It will help that they are home though and they should look to redeem themselves after last season’s matchup versus Appalachian State.
Ole Miss (Nov. 5)
This game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Oxford, Mississippi. This game could end up being a nationally televised game depending on how each team is doing at that point in the season. This features the only matchup where they will be playing an SEC team. Ole Miss has the potential to win the SEC, so it is a huge matchup for the Eagles. Ole Miss has a ton of talent and they will look to reload after a stellar season last season when they won the Sugar Bowl.
Georgia State (Nov. 19)
This game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Atlanta. This is also a rivalry game and Georgia Southern will look to redeem themselves after an embarrassing 34-7 loss last season. Nate Arbuckle will be gone so Georgia State will have to find a new quarterback to lead them this season. Georgia Southern should be the favorite and should take care of business in this matchup.
