I Am So Much More Than Your Stereotypes

Not Your Average Sorority Girl

Sorority Girl: "A sorority girl is a female college student. She will normally be seen wearing Chanel sunglasses, a Northface jacket and bag representing her sorority's letters. Sorority girls are typically high maintenance and very uppity. Most are white middle and upper middle-class girls that are spoiled and extremely materialistic. These bleach blondes are extremely loud and spend most of their time shopping and partying with frat boys." (Via Urban Dictionary)

People on the outside looking in stare at sorority girls with judgmental eyes. In their minds, they know me. It's easier for people to pre-judge someone based off of what they know about sororities, but in reality, they don’t know me — and it isn’t fair. Yes, I am the girl who could spend hours in TJmaxx and Target. Yes, I am the girl who loves wearing bright colors, going to country concerts in cowboy boots and takes pictures of everything. Yes, I am the girl who listens to Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Sam Hunt. However, none of that, none of those things make me the "dumb, stereotypical, stuck-up sorority girl."

While I’m the "Yes Girl" to all of that, I’m also the ‘Yes Girl’ to so much more. Yes, I’m the girl who studies hard and works for what I want in life. Yes, I’m the girl who spends Sunday afternoons in the library and has missed a night out having fun with my friends because of a test or early class the next day. Yes, I am the girl who has mastered time management because of this. Yes, I’m the girl who donates my time helping the homeless and who cries during animal shelter commercials if I don't change the station within five seconds.

Yes, I’m the girl who goes to church and would rather be on a mission trip serving The Lord and helping kids.Yes, I am the girl who dresses as a taco for Halloween instead of a Victoria's Secret Angel. Yes, I am the girl who would rather shop at Goodwill over Lily Pulitzer. Yes, I am an athlete. Yes, I am the girl who would rather eat pizza, tacos and biscuits instead of a salad. Yes, I’m the girl who volunteers with children for my sorority. Yes, I’m the girl who takes pride in what I do, be it school, work, or relationships and when I do something, I do it 100%. Yes, I am the girl who would wear Nike shorts and cat shirts every day of the week if I could.

Yes, I’m the girl who knows the difference between right and wrong and I’m the girl who would do anything for my friends and family. I’m the girl who doesn’t deserve to be judged by people who don't take the time to get to know me.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
