I Do Not Use High-End Skin Products, Here's Why

Thinking high-end products might help my skin only made it worse––until I decided to keep it simple, not listen to anyone and do what is best for my own skin.

With an overwhelming influx of new cosmetic products, it can be difficult not to try them. Your friends raving about the new concealer that they swear by, their on-point eye makeup in pictures (all thanks to the fancy eye palette with different shades you probably won't even touch) can all be tempting to try and see what the buzz is about.

Recently, my skin gave up on me.

It was dry and flaky one day and breaking out another. Dead skin deposits around the nose and forehead were a daily struggle. With any product I used, I would see tiny bumps on my skin shortly after which were painfully prominent in daylight. I was in and out of stores asking everyone for consultations about skin types, spending so much money trying to calm my skin down.

Clearly, I had no idea what was going on.

As far as makeup goes, YSL, Vitalumiere Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk, Too Faced Born This Way, all have been applied, but I knew that if the skin is not feeling so good, makeup won't do much.

In need of some more professional help, I made an appointment with a dermatologist for the first time in my life. To be honest, I was kind of excited. I thought, "Hey, maybe I will get that celebrity glow." The very well-known dermatologist gave me a night-time cream that left me excited to try, but also with a swollen face the next morning.

I then decided to go natural and ordered a turmeric face wash. I was told to ignore any initial minor skin reactions and give new products time, but the breakouts kept getting worse. I had to cleanse my face with something.

Cetaphil, I found, was too drying. So, now what?

Thank goodness I walked into the pharmacy and got the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser (not the foaming face wash), and it has calmed my skin down. I am at peace with it at the moment. I use the SPF by CeraVe occasionally and no breakouts!

I have found Vanicream's body lotion to be the best for sensitive skin.

For a facial moisturizer, Shea Moisture's coconut oil is wonderful. All I needed to do was walk into the nearest drugstore. High-end products may be great, and maybe one might work for me someday. Today, though, these products did the saving for me I so desperately needed.

So guys, no matter what some friend or Kardashian might tell you, you know your skin. Do what is best for it and start simple. Your skin will thank you.

CeraVe or Vani or Shea Moisture need to sponsor me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
