Being a senior in high school comes with a lot of pressure. Applying to Universities, getting accepted and finally picking your future University and declaring a major. This can be a bit much for an eighteen year old. It seems as if your entire future is in the palm of your hands, and it basically is. That is why I am a huge advocate of Community College. It seems as if community colleges are overlooked, and high school students most of the time don't want to hear anything about it. But I'm Here to tell you first hand that it is the best thing for anyone unsure of their future.
As a young adult committing to a university or a major could be very scary. That's why community college is the perfect option for most students. The community college route allows young adults to find themselves and to discover if college is even for them. Community college offers students the comfort of home and the room to grow. This option is the best option for students who are unsure of what they want in their future. Community college allows students the freedom to explore their interests with out the commitment of declaring a major.
Community College is the perfect place to get your feet a bit wet. College is certainly not for everyone and it is way cheaper to discover its not for you through a community college rather than an expansive university. This is the perfect way to learn about yourself, you'll either love college or hate it.
You can earn an associates degree at a community college and transfer over to a University eventually if you'd like. Most Universities over Transfer Scholarships. These scholarships often knock the price of tuition in half. This is the only reason I can afford to be at my current University. I save about $15,000 a year just because of the transfer scholarship.
Often by the time the associates degree is completed students know what they want out of college and if they want to take it any further. This gives students time to grown in confidence and to explore what courses may spark an interest. By this time most students know what direction they want to go in, as far as their future careers go.
Not sure what you want to do with your life? Take a trip to your local community college and see what they have to offer. You are taking one step in the right direction and might even find yourself along the way, I did!
