A Not So Typical Open Letter To My Parents
Lexi Gericke

Before you sigh as you open this link because it's another basic girl's "Open Letter To Her Parents," let me just say this isn't your typical thank-you letter. This isn't a typical thank-you letter because I don't have typical parents. And let's be honest they didn't raise typical, bland children. Growing up, my life was basically like a Better Homes and Garden magazine met an episode of the "Real Housewives. " So this one's for you, mom and dad. Thanks for basically being the shit.

Mom, you're the most perfect human being I've ever met. I don't think there's anyone out there as truly wonderful as you. You have the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met, and you are wise beyond your years. You've been my best friend since day one, and I cannot express how much our friendship will mean to me forever.

Dad, you're my biggest role model in life. You work harder than anyone I know, and you love bigger than anyone I know too. You're the most generous person I've ever met in my entire life, and I hope I can be just like you when I get older. You're my biggest hero and you always will be.

Thank you for always tackling life's hard lessons with rap lyrics. Thanks for teaching me that when I had boy problems I actually had 99 problems but a bitch was not one. Thanks for spitting mad rhymes whenever girls were being mean at school.

Thank you for always teaching me what a true marriage should look like. I appreciate the love you two have for one another more than you'll ever know. Thank you for always modeling what a marriage should be. Thank you for always going on weekly date nights, and not being afraid to show, sometimes copious and gross, amounts of PDA. If it wasn't for that I would be the strong believer I am today in marriage.

Thank you for always emphasizing there's no better laugh than a laugh spent at a sibling's expense. Thank you for teaching me that my siblings are my best friends. Thanks for making us hang out even when we were angry at each other. Thank you for fueling our chaos with laughter, making sure we knew we had to kick some ass if anyone ever picked on the other and that our siblings make for great comedic relief when you're having a bad day. One day you two may not be here but rest assured, we will always have each other.

Thank you for always taking in my friends. Thank you for being the parents that perfectly tip-toed the line of cool-parent but also strict-parent. Thanks for constantly having the house stocked with snacks and always making sure there was some sort of baked good. And thank you for always being the safe space for all of us to hangout. You all weren't just parents to me but to all of our friends too.

Thank you for always making dinner table conversation a part of every day. I didn't know it then, but being able to sit around our dining room table every night was something I took for granted. Those conversations hold the best memories and the best laughs. I don't know any other family that had two to three-hour dinners together.

Thank you for always making sure we knew the importance of time spent just the five of us. I didn't realize how many families didn't emphasize the importance of quality time together until I was exposed to people from all different walks of life and realized that most families didn't have shows they watched together religiously, or that some families had never had a family game night or cooked a meal together. Thank you for always making sure that in the end all we really had was each other.

Thank you for always being in my business. Thank you for always being active and educated on what was going on in my life and always being the first to teach me a lesson or make sure I was staying on the straight and narrow.

All in all thank you for everything. Thank you for being my best friends. Thank you for being my first choice and favorite people to hang out with. Thank you for loving me no matter how many times I screw up. Thank you for all of your many sacrifices you've made for my wellbeing. Thank you for never wavering in your love for me. Thank you for always attacking life's mistakes with humor, but only after a lesson was taught. Thank you for making ball jokes. Thank you for speaking gibberish. Thank you for being a cranky old guy dad, but not really because you're actually the kindest person in the whole world. Thank you for being you, mom and dad. I will never be able to tell you both how much you mean to me or how much I love you. Thank you for not being the typical parents.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
