Is It OK To Not Know What You Want To Do?

The game of 'life' comes with difficult decisions.

Is It OK To Not Know What You Want To Do?

When I was in high school, I remember being pressured by my guidance counselor to choose a path for my college career. Already filled with the typical high school stress and a bad case of senioritis, I was consistently making up life plans in my head with the hopes of fulfilling them successfully. It’s not easy to choose your path of life at 18 years old. I was afraid that I would make a huge mistake and regret any college-based decisions that I made.

I think we all stress over the fact of knowing what we want to do in life. Sometimes, you just don’t know. Your mind can become a pit of indecisiveness that empowers you and takes over every decision you are trying to make. I believe that overthinking your decisions could make the whole process harder. Personally, I'm the most indecisive person ever. However, I find that when I have my heart set on something and I have the confidence to pursue it, I feel more secure with my decision.

Fast forward to college and I’m still stressing over what life path I want to take. I have sat down and fought my own thoughts and life plans innumerable times. There have been times where I thought that the path I am on now is the one that is completely wrong for me. Second guessing my decisions have become a daily struggle for me due to my indecisiveness. Over the course of this struggle, I have learned that it’s okay to not know what I want to do.

Life is all about trial and error. After 19 years on this planet, I have made some great decisions and I have made some terrible ones. Both the good and bad decisions have taught me how to go about things in my life and I have grown stronger and wiser due to these occurrences. The life experiences I've had thus far have shaped me into who I am.

One day, I may wake up and want to be a doctor. Medical school is far off from the path that I’m on now, but hey, it’s okay to let your mind wander. I believe we are all on the path that we're on for a reason. Although you may not know that reason, you’ll figure it out one day.

Its OK to not know what you want to do. In life, we are faced with important decisions that are sometimes difficult to make, but things can almost always be changed and altered. If your heart is set on something, go for it. Have confidence that you can be uncertain of what you want to do and still be OK. It's always better to live a life you love rather than a life you hate.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
