Not Just An Uncle

My uncle is the greatest person I know, he gives me the best advice, and always has my back no matter what happens.

Having a built in best friend growing up is one of the greatest things. Most people have an older brother or sister, I have an uncle who's my age. We're a year a part, and closer than we'll ever be. He's always been my right-hand guy, and my best friend. We grew up together and have always had the best relationship. As we got older he became more of a brother than an uncle but is just as protective as any kind of family member can be. It can be weird introducing him to my friends, especially when we were younger, but now he's known as "The Uncle" to all my friends and an uncle to all.

We fight like siblings, we are so much more alike than I'd like to admit at times but that's why we're so close. I would be completely lost without him in my life. We've grown up being uncle and niece and see nothing wrong with it. He's just 22 years old and a senior in college, while I'm 21 and a junior in college. It's like having a built in best friend in my family during vacations. He is the person that I turn to for everything, from when I'm bored to having major life crisis's.

Having a young uncle is great and all but having to explain it to people is the most difficult thing. It usually starts off with us introducing the other and people starring at us in disbelief then proceeding to laughing saying "oh you're kidding, so funny!" And we always look at each other like really is there ever going to be a time that someone doesn't think we're joking. I promise you having an uncle close to the same age as you can happen, and everyone gets lost. My favorite part is when I'm talking about him and I always have to say, "my uncle, he's 22" and then Igo on with my story. If I don't explain his age first all our stories sound weird and not very believable.

My uncle is the greatest person I know, he gives me the best advice, and always has my back no matter what happens. He will tell me the truth whether I want to hear it or not and will let me have my crazy moments when needed. We have the best memories, they all start and end with Disney because we're absolute obsessed and have been since we were little kids. My favorite memories are going to Disney with him, and how the times have changed from when we were little to now.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
